Driver keeps resetting screen to 60hz

I got Optoma HD72i projector (via DVI-D) and Samsung 913N (via VGA) connected to my Radeon x800xt card. I am running them in "cloned" mode the Optoma the primary monitor. I got v6.3 drivers installed at the moment. I am living in Europe, so most of the DVDs (in 1280x720) i watch are in PAL format and so i need to have refresh rate multiple of 25, such as 75hz.

I also have digitv box connected to the Optoma (via svideo). The prolem is that if i change the video source of the _projector_ to watch some TV channels, the _Samsung_ goes blank for a second and resets the video mode. When i change the video source back to PC screen (2nd monitor resets again), the screen has reset to 60hz.

The problem with the screens resetting to 60hz must have something to do that from drivers point of view the Optoma is not capable of 75Hz in any of the widescreen modes. I have even tried making a custom monitor.inf with all the modes specefied there...no luck...only 60hz available for the widescreen modes. The only way of running the projector in 75hz is with powerstrip, but even then both screens resets to 60hz when changing the video source.

Recently i installed linux (Ubuntu) on my pc as secondary OS, and setup the X modeline for the 1280x720 75hz (using linux ATI drivers). No screens going black, no refresh rates resetting to 60hz.

I which there was a way with the windows drivers to force the driver to believe that my projector is capable of 75Hz in widescreen modes. Why the 2nd monitor goes blank for a second when changing source on the projector beats me too. Any ideas?

Hi, elviz,

And welcome to DH!

This problem has been discussed quite a bit here and is likely due to the TV-OUT being active on your system. TV refresh rates are locked to 60 Hz.

You can override this by unchecking the "Hide modes that this monitor cannot display" after selecting the monitor you wish to boost to higher refresh rates.

Good luck!

Thanks for your reply.

How do i disable tv output with 6.3 drivers? Pre-CCC i could find TV listed as monitor in control panel, but CCC don't show it anywhere. Does that mean its disabled? CCC does not seem have any enable/disable button for TV out, nor does any of the utilities for ATI cards i have tried (ati tool, ati tray tools, rivatuner, powerstrip).

The "hide modes the monitor cannot display" option is unchecked and greyed out for both monitors.

ps. 75hz modes works ok with 4:3 resolutions, only 16:9 resolutions have unwanted feature.

Sorry for the delay getting back to you. I had to go into my other computer that's using CCC to find the correct setting.

I use the Advanced view option and when you select the Displays Manager option, if you don't see a second monitor activated, you don't have TV Out active. If you DO see two active displays, then you do have it active.

If so, you should be able to simply drag and drop the TV display into the Disabled box, or right click on the display you wish to change.

In order to override the restriction on the Refresh rates, go to Monitor Properties and select the Attributes option. Here you'll need to Uncheck the EDID box. But, be careful now when setting resolutions and refresh rates. If you set them higher than you monitor can use, you'll can mess things up pretty bad.

Good luck!

I just can't find that EDID (or DDC) setting for my display. I now have the "list all possible modes" chosen in the "display options" panel. it didn't help tho.

I reinstalled 6.3 drivers (tried 6.2 based omegas to be sure the TV out is disabled). Now i only have one display device connected with DVI-D cable (not DVI-I) to my radeon X800xt. The device is Optoma hd72i, which does not have genuine display driver available, so windows uses the "plug and play display" driver.

I went through the settings in CCC. Right clicked the monitor in "display manager". Only thing available there is "rotate", with "swap display mapping" and "disable" options disabled (greyed out).

If i right click the blue desktop area icon (the one with "1" written on it) the only selectable option is "identify".

If I go to the "digital panel properties" theres only two sets if options "Image scaling" and "DVI settings".

If i go to the "display properties/settings/advanced/monitor" i only find the "properties" button and "60hz" as the only option in the refresh rate selection box (75hz is available for 4:3 modes). There the "hide modes this monitor cannot display" is greyed out.

Forcing the 75hz mode with the option in "display manager" does not help either.

So, is this EDID option at all available for digital panels? I have seen it for analog displays tho. Could change to DVI-I cable help my problem? And, is there for instance some registry tweak i could use to confuse the driver and slave it under my control ?

This might have something to do with the problem:

From ATIs customer care knowledge base:

737-21454: Refresh rate is locked to 60Hz using dual displays in stretched desktop mode.
The information in this article applies to the following configuration(s):
  • Catalyst Control Center
When using dual displays in a stretch mode, the resolution cannot be changed from 60Hz.

ATI Engineering has been advised of this issue and is investigating. Any updates will be published when they become available.
