X1800XL black screen problem

Hey there,

Since this week I have a new system

AMD Athlon 64 3400+
ATI Radeon X1800XL
1024 DDR
MSI RS482M/RS380M Mother Board
Asus powersupply of 400/450 wattage

And I am having issues with it. I have the latest bios, latest drivers installed.

While playing games I have lockups, then my screen goes black, and VPU Recover manages to reset the GPU and then I can play for a short while again. If I continue playing then after 2 or 3 lockups the display driver somehow is turned off and I need to press ctrl-alt-delete to end process my game.

I have tried LOADS of things, and the recent change was loading optimized defaulst in the BIOS. With those defaults the game seems to live a little longer but still every game give lockups.

The game where it has NOT happend are Unrealtournament, Colin McRea Rally 2005 and Half-Life 1. Counter-strike 1.6 I had it only happen once.

I tried turning VPU Recover off, I switched to Omega drivers which also did not help unfortunatly. I think I am out of options, the temperature in my case is fine, around 45 degrees, and my videocard around 50 not playing and around 65 while I am playing.

The fan of my videocard starts normal, but it does spin up and stays spinning fast while I am playing half-life2 for example, so it doesnt seem to be getting to hot.

I am also beginning to doubt whether my videocard is broken or not, I mean if it is broken it's oddly broken in my opinion

You guys are my last resort, any tips I can try?

Did you manually set DDR voltage in BIOS? This causes many, many problems, as performance DDR often has a minimum requirement that is not met by default BIOS settings. If you don't know how to look it up, post your memory specs here.
