Pissed 3.0 Drivers/ Control panel settings

Just got my 9700 pro had problems installing 7.81 drivers from ATI. It gave me an INFsetup.exe General protection error. I rebooted and drivers loaded fine, well now i'm trying to play my games especially UT2k3 but all I see is crappy graphics. Jagged edges around players and other textures in game......totally awful! Not up to 9700 pro standards I would suppose, anyway i tried to adjust settings in control panel with little success ( smoothvision 2 - anti aliasing etc. ) tried many of settings and none would fix the bad jagged edges. Can anyone give this n00b some tips?? Thanks all

add- everything else works great besides game play graphics.

Asus A7V8x

What screen resolution are you running in? Do the crappy graphics happen in other games? Have you played around the the D3D and OGL Quality/Performance slider?

800x600 res, yes... I tried many configs in the D3d and opengl (none seem to make a slightest difference). The jagged edges are in all my games I play

Bump your resolution up to 1024x768x32 and you should notice a big difference. Enabling AA and AF doesn't do anything?

Ok, I will try that later today after work. But yeah, the AA and AF seems not to do anything! I tried to slide the D3d to max quality and opengl to performance and switched them etc. Nothing! Weird thanks

Try setting them both to Max Quality when you get home, and download the latest drivers for your video card. Have you downloaded DirectX 9?

Two things.

Try setting your D3D & openGL to "high quality" on the slider bar, (one bump to the right from the default), REBOOT, and try it. If you're really using the Cat3.0 set I'd highly recomend trying the Cat3.0a set, it's much better.

ok, yes I have both the latest drivers and DX9.0. I have the ATI version on the Catalyst 3.0 with the Control Panel. I wanted to try to install the Omega Ver, do I need to uninstall the Control panel or the drivers to install this?

Nope..the 3.0a driver is ATi's absolute latest version of the 3.0, and can be downloaded from ATi's website. Omega's driver is based on the 3.0 set, but I don't know the difference between the Catalyst 3.0 set and the Catalyst 3.0a set..

Oh, I think its something to do with WHQL signature. Yea i just barely installed the latest one from ATi about 3 days ago. So I think I have the latest unless.....they put another update up within the last 48 hours??? But I know the old Cat 3.0 did not have the WHQL signed and the new ones do. Hmm.......

OK, so here is the update! I was getting those INFsetup.exe general protection errors when I first installed the latest 3.0 Cat drivers from ATI site (after a rebbot everything went to normal). When I went into control panel there was no smartgart tab? Should I have one? Just Today I installed the Omega Driver with no hassle over the ATI drivers, installed very easy but still no Smartgart tab? Where is it, and what am I missing? I still cannot get my graphics to be smooth on two of my games though.

I tried putting my Res higher in games and adjusting AA and AF still no luck
Should I do a clean uninstall and reinstall or maybe just reinstall game/s?
Thanks

Would you happen to know your AGP Aperture size? Set to either 64 or 128 if you can..

Try bumping the Aperture size up to 128, and check this link out for some other helpful BIOS settings. Is your video card sharing any IRQs with anything else? If the card is a Powered by ATi, try downloading drivers from their website. Some cards may be picky.. In order see your SmartGart settings, click Start - Run - and type in smartgart. If you don't get anything up, you may need to enable the ATi Smart service.

Type "services.msc" (sin quotas) in the run command, and you should see a service called "ATI Smart" towards the top of the list. Mine is set to automatic, so make sure yours is too. I'm not sure you really gain anything with the SmartGart tab though. Most people think it's dumb..

Well, I still have problems with the jaggies....anyone else have ideas what it might be? I did a clean uninstall/reinstall of Omega drivers, installed perfect. Updated my VIA drivers to Hyperion and Dx9.0.

I set AA and AF then reboot and jaggies still in my games, everything else is stable but the graphics in the game. Dang!
