Sad ATI9500Pro...

My first post!

No more smillies from here though

Hi, just installed this 9500Pro in my new computer and it doesn't finish 3D Mark half the time. When it does, I get 12000 but it isn't reliable. I put my old GF2 GTS in that system and it is rock solid. When the 9500 "fails", my comp restarts or I get kicked out of the application (3D Mark or BF1942). I ran everything in Norton Works 03, no prob found. Ad-Aware didnt find anything either.
Athlon 2400+ Stock Fan (temps are ok)
Asus A7N8X DLX (1001g), WD80HD
512RAM PC2100
420W TT PSU
Dragon Steel Case, 4 fans
Win XP Home SP1

Computer had everything installed clean as everything was new but the RAM.

You guys think the card is bad? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, VP out.

Hmmm... can you give us some guesstimates as to the temperatures of the card? Turn the computer off and quickly touch the back of the PCB or close to the core on the heatsink - is it insanely burning hot or warm? Also, those 4 fans - do you have them circulating air, or all doing the same thing? Lastly, does this crash happen at consistent times (in the app or since booting)... does shutting down then booting up again help any? Oh, and do you have the most recent drivers put in?

Asus Probe temps are constant at 19C for the mobo, 34C for the CPU
BIOS: 19C for the mobo, 50-53C for the CPU
Card temp is warm.

2 fans are getting air in from the front of the case, the other 2 are getting it out at the back.

I tried the drivers that came with the card, updated to DX9 and CAT 3. Tried the Omega drivers too and a different combos. The whole system is up to date as for drivers, except maybe, the mobo drivers.

I tried the 1.7 AGP voltage thing (from 1.5), no change.

Crashes seem random, never really a constant pattern.

Thanks for a quick reply.

Sounds like it may be your power supply. You'd be surprised at how that can sometimes be the culprit. They can just sort of poop on you at critical times. What kind do you have?

I've also found that setting your RAM timers too aggressively can cause instabilities.

Update those motherboard drivers! Sometimes they will support newer hardware better.

Hope you get your stability probelms solved soon. Welcome to DH VelvetPaw!

A brand new Thermal Take 420 watt is the PSU. RAM timers have always been default as I was looking for stability first. Is there a proggy that can "benchmark" my PSU?

Ok, I'll update the mobo drivers. I have never had a need to do that in 7 years of computing, but hey, sounds like the time has come. I'll post my findings/results. Thanks for the welcome and the tips folks!

One more thing....

....ATI sent me a 9500 Pro to play with for the last few weeks, and I loved it...but I could NOT overclock Bubbles as high with her. I can only run Bubbles at 1.580 with the 9500 Pro in, with me GF3 or 8500 she runs at 1.75 . Are you OCing at all?

No overclocking at all. New everything, still looking for stability for the first 6 months then I might play with settings a bit more.

I am starting to understand why so many people dislike ATI I just wanted a Plug'n'Play top video card, but I all I got was an unstable (and pricey) device that makes me bug people on computer forums...

Where was I? Oh yes, BIOS driver upgrade! Wish me luck, I might be gone for a while, LOL

Good luck!

Best of luck! I always get sweaty palms when I'm flashing me BIOS....still!

EDITED BITS: HOLD EVERYTHING! What drivers are you using with your 9500 right now? Which exact version number?

Well, I survived the BIOS update!

75 minutes of stable play looked promising. I'll keep ya all updated as I need a break from all this technology!

/me keeps his fingers crossed during his break!

Big Grin

Well, we can now close this as my Asus A7N8X Deluxe BIOS upgrade from 1001g to 1002 seemed to have been the solution. Sorry about that ATI, I really thought it was your card

/me slaps his n00b self!

Thanks folks and take care!
