ATI - 640 X 480 @ 4 Bit Issue

Hey Guys, I wanted a new thread for this issue becasue quite a few guys are reporting it now. The problem is when you install the new 6.5 driver package your system restarts into 640 X480 @ 4 bit color and you cannot change it. OK, SO:
1. Don't Panic Your Graphics card is fine
2. Don't waste your time clean installing the OS -it will only waste your time.
3. Don't try a Modded set of CAT 6.5 it doesn't help
4. DO just use the 6.4's until we figure out the issue..or a new set is released like 6.6

For what I have noticed it seems most of us have the same cards and Chipsets. I use the All in Wonder 9600 XT and I have the KT 400 Chipset. OK guy's so if your having this issue can you please list your card model and your chipset..I have benn working on this issue ever since the driver hit the streets..So post your info guys.. Maybe we can figure it out ourselves instead of waiting for others

Wow, this issue is back again.

Some of us around here had this exact problem with the 5.4 drivers last year, it only seemed to affect some people, and the ATi guys wouldn't say anything about it because they didn't see any problem to admit to. Curiously, the following month, the drivers went back to normal, still with no comment from ATi. I had forgotten about it until now.

Check this old thread for some more information. I vaguely remember Omega's version of the 5.4 drivers solved the problem. I'd certainly agree with the topic poster on this one, there's not a damn thing you can do about the problem, so don't waste your time... just wait and see if the next driver release fixes it.

No problems with 6.5 on my X800 Pro, but as someone who seen this issue last year... I believe you, guys.

probubly somethig on the users machine or te method of uninstall. I've had
issues useing "driver cleaners" (sorry spike tis isn't aimed at you). Such tools
have thier place but aren't needed evryday IMO: They've made issues for me
in the pastthat all I will say. It could very well be windows fault or the installer
but its rare.

The least problematic way of doing it is:
#1) Uninstall CCC
#2) run the driver uninstall (unless your subject install errors, then skip to 3)
#3) reboot
#4) install the fresh set
#5reboot

If you have a problem you need only go into the device manager and install
the drivers thier the click here to update drivers in you video cards propertie
page an point it tote folder with the ATI inf's...

I've never heard of this issue before now. I'm also running 6.5 without a problem.

As I said I think it's isolated to the 9600 based boards and a possible relation to the KT400 chipsets..
I have tried all modded version out there in hopes of isolating the issue to a specific release. No go, they are all the same and they all exhibit the same issue.

Hi,

Prolog:

I've reinstalled my OS last night. Did the standard things like installing a recursive Update for Windows XP SP2 (Winfuture Update Pack), Chipset Drivers etc ... After that I thought lets install the Omega Drivers.

Due the installation process everything works fine. No Errors. But after a reboot I saw this 640x480 4bit Screen. Hum ... something went wrong i thought ...

I was navigating to the Desktop Prefernces Tab but what happend ... "Invalid Desktoppreferences [cut] the installed driver is not compatible with this windows version"

Never heard that before! Normal way for me was to read the forum entrys ... so now im here .. read the post and thought "No, that cant be I wont use this oversized ati CCC %&$!"

After hours of testing, note i've reinstalled my system so it wouldnt be hard for me to kill my system again if something went wrong , i found a solution that worked for me.

// Note: Yes, i reinstalled my system more than 3 times at this day, not just only for reproducing the following "it-worked-for-me"-solution dont know if it will work in other cases. But i hope it'll help =)

----

System Specs in short:

ASUS A7V600-X (VIA KT600 Chipset) using VIA_HyperionPro_V508A Drivers
Sapphire ATI 9600XT 256MB
Windows XP

--
My personal solution (as it worked for me)

1. open the Controllmanager navigate to "Systemdevices" and check if the "VIA CPU to AGP Controller" is NOT from Microsoft. (Should be named VIA CPU to AGP2.0/AGP3.0 Controller" if the VIA Driver is installed)

For me the VIA Hyperion driver set didn't update this driver so i must Right-click "Update Driver"->"Software from list"->"don't search ..."->"Source"-> manually navigate to the before extracted VIA_HyperionPro_V508A\viaagp\DRIVER\WinXP Folder, OK, follow instructions. Reboot.

ATTENTION: DONT add manually the Driver through the Hardwaremanager. Its totally recommended to just update the driver. If you add the driver to the Hardwareprofile you'll have 2 VIA CPU to AGP Controllers and the system will NOT, i repeat NOT boot. Safety Mode (F8 at boottime) is NOT accessible then. In my case system reboots everytime after Bootlogo, regardless which option i've chosen in the menu. You have been warned

If you've overread this passage you can manually remove the driver file under %SystemRoot%\system32\drivers\VIAAGP1.sys with the Windows Repair Console or UBCD4Win http://www.ubcd4win.com/

2. After that use the DriverCleanerPRO from http://drivercleaner.net/professional.html (Current is Version 1.5) and check "Multiple..."

3. Now add ALL ATI related things "ATI, ATI CCC, ATI RAGE..." and so on. And if i say all i mean all ATI related ignoring "i dont have installed it i know it, why should i check it?" Just do it Start the process. If DCPro is finished go on with step number 4

4. Restart your PC and install the Omega drivers. (in addition i recommend to install ONLY ATT.)

// If everything is now ok, skip the next steps

In my case my monitor now only operate at 60Hz regardless setting the Monitor to 85Hz in the Monitor Preferences Tab. I figured out that if i right-clicked the ATT Icon Display->Default Single Display my Monitor refreshes and operates at 85Hz
(or simply play with the Resolution Control, in the desktop preferences tab)

Furthermore everytime i did a reboot my monitor-driver was killed or replaced with "MS shipped drivers, to "EMPTY" or "Standardmonitor". So i tryed to use the ATi RefreshFix-Tool.

5. Download ATi RefreshFix for Win XP and Win2k from http://www.radeon2.ru/refreshfix_eng.html and reboot again.

6. Extract the Zip-File to somedir execute RefreshFix.exe. In my case it showed a warning message "Native Modes not set, Fixit?" Click on Fix&Reboot.

- Have Fun -

Some additional cogitations and logs
----

I used the OmagaDrivers based on Cat6.5 on my long used Windows XP. Installed it with no errors and no problems after Uninstalling ATI Cat 6.3 through Softwaretab under Systempreferences and after using the DriverCleanerPro (Thats my default action if i decide to install a 3rd Party driver).
-

This 640x480 at 4bit problem only occurs at "fresh" installing Windows XP with Omega Drivers based on Cat 6.5 in my case. As i said i've never seen that before since Cat 5.0.

So i think it could be a "Driver Scrap"/Prefetch/Driver Cache Problem. I mean Windows XP is shipped with ATI Radeon 9600 WHQL Drivers and if i install the Omega Drivers based on Cat 6.5 this problem occurs. Maybe the 6.5 Drivers are not reverse compatible to some files (Code Change?) ? Or if some are mixed with MS <-> ATI drivers? Some files are loaded/in use so those are blocked to delete/replace?

-

Furthermore Windows XP is trying to detect the drivers after installation&reboot procedure of OmegaDrivers. Maybe at this point something went wrong. The only thing i can see is the "Automatic Installation of Hardwaredrivers".
-

After using the DriverCleaner Windows XP didn't recognize my 9600XT .. it said "Videocontroller" for Primary Monitor Out and "Videocontroller (VGA)" to Secondary Monitor Out. So i think ati drivers were completly wiped out of my system. But i dont know .. because at this point my resolution was set to "1280x1024" at 32bit with 60Hz connected to "Standardmonitor" ... I dont know much about driver installation procedure or "in-deep"-details of the Grafic System , but in this case i think silently "why can i run at 1280x1024 in this depth. Ok in this state i have a poor grafic acceleration but hey how can it be?"

So your relating your issue, to the Via Chipset drivers not being installed properly on your system? or did I misunderstand? UNfortunatley my Chipset drivers are fine, and I still have the issue. So I am unsure of how to proceed..

Ati Radeon 9600 XT 256MB
Athlon Processor
MSI M/B KT400 CHipset KT4V

Looks like same problem had it happen several times and I have done 2 complete fresh reinstalls.
M/B AGP drivers aok and up to date
Trying previous version .........................

............. OK, can't say what went wrong with the new drivers but here's my course of action with the previous drivers ..... ver. 38221 and they installed and worked first time (same installation method used to most recent drivers 38252 with no luck !)

Uninstalled Omega drivers through Start Programs Menu
Ran Driver Cleaner and removed EVERYTHING that started ATI
Rebooted and got VGA mode
Installed previous version 38221 ... rebooted, everything aok !

If I can be of any help supplying information please let me know, just remember I am no expert and require instructions on info. you may require.

Possibly I didn't report detailed enough in some case =) For me, I did a VIA AGP Manual driver update to kill one of the possible alternatives, cause the MS driver is an builtin driver and CAN be a possible problem (incompatible drivers/version mismatch). So I attached the Eventlog. Btw I can sleep better, if I have the full VIA drivers installed (Now I can say, no obsolete drivers of my Chipset drivers were installed.)

More than more I think about the Event log.. I think it is a "Cache" Problem. Relating to the Event log one file has an error ... " You are running different builds of the miniport and display driver. Please use a matched pair." In detail i mean Windows XP has a driver cache feature. This can be used to install one of the older previously installed drivers. Could be that Windows XP didn't accept one of the driver files (cause of the error) so that it installs another version of the file and due this process it confuses itself. The result is an incorrect and not complete driver installation. Can't proof it, it's only a theory.

// As I know the install procedure of Windows XP it tests the newly installed drivers and differs it with the previously "status OK fits perfectly" installed drivers. And if everything is ok it accepts the drivers and set the status to "OK verified". And if this failed then it will copy back some files and trys to set it back to status ok but what if some files in use? cant be moved then ... so that could be the confusion. Result is "Not compatible" The word compatible can be seen as "error happend/failure" See this as an addition to my previous train of thoughts.

Why I can say that? Because if no previously OLD Microsoft drivers were installed (using the DriverCleaner it kills all ATI related files located on the system harddisk), either in prefetch/cache nor in the system32 folder (see DriverCleaner log).

Possibly and in addition, but not for shure (im not a profession), it could be that some routines in some Cat 6.5 dlls were not compatible with some mixed obsolete MS drivers (incorrect procedure calls -> results in overflow?).

Im interested if jxjcksn has the same error logs in his/her error log ( sorry for that i dont know if you are male or female )

So jxjcksn could you please check that out? Go to your Eventmanager in Systempreferences. Look in the System Eventlog for an entry that has ati2mtag as Eventsource and post your results as a full log here. To do so, you can click on the copy button right under the two Pointers (one up, one down).

regards, luricos.

@luricos, Actually I think your on the right track, this is exactly what I have been thinking. It's a driver cache-file protection error. When I look in the Event viewer after a 6.5 install I get file protection errors and it says the driver were replaced by verified version from the driver cache, I guess. So I think if the driver is getting installed it is incomplete. This HAS to be the cause of all our problems. For some reason windows doesn't think the driver is "good" so it pull s out windows version of these files and installs them.

Right Click on My Computer icon. Select Manage.

You should then see: Computer Management screen.

Expand the Event Viewer item.

Select Application and/or System.

Then look for warnings and such.

What I did was clear the logs, then try and install 6.5 and go back to the drivers I was using. Went I looked in the event viewer I had a Windows File Protection Error for each file -ati files I mean. I think guys this is where our issue is!

hi,

@jxjchks: Nice you found it but i only mean those logs in "SYSTEM" Category. "Event Type: Error" and "Event Source: ati2mtag" or "System file Protection" errors. Same like i've postet earlier in this thread =)

Please look for those Errors carefully. Ill install another WindowsXP on my PC to test this error again.

@ROBSCIX:

@luricos, Actually I think your on the right track, this is exactly what I have been thinking. It's a driver cache-file protection error. When I look in the Event viewer after a 6.5 install I get file protection errors and it says the driver were replaced by [cut]
Actually i dont have System File Protection turned on cause im using a custom WindowsXP install customized with nLite. But this would be my second train of thoughts =) Furthermore I totally agree with your last 2 posts =)

As I said and if I have some free time, ill test it with an standard install of windowsxp sp2. Saving all the log files in a txt file for debugging purpose.

My installation plan will be:
Windows XP SP2
Recursive Winfuture Windows XP Update 2.10
Via Chipset drivers (including manual update CPU to AGP Controller)
Radeon Omega Drivers based on Cat 6.5

regards, luricos.
PS: I think ill do this 3 times to verify this error, so i can reproduce it any time.

Have any of you attempted a manual update driver from within Safemode?

If you haven't, I'd like to see if anyone will do that and report the results. First, uninstall the current drivers you have, reboot, let Windows redetect the card and then proceed with the Safemode installation as detailed next.

In case you're not familiar with how to do it, just follow these steps:

1. Reboot the computer and keep pressing the F8 function key beginning right after the initial POST screen and BEFORE Windows begins to load.

2. Select SAFEMODE from the options and follow any prompts until you are in Safemode.

3. Go to the Device Manager.

4. Click to expand the listing for the Display Adapters. (You should see TWO instances listed with one of them being designated a "Secondary".)

5. Double click on the first instance.

6. Click on the Driver tab.

7. Click on the Update Driver option.

8. On the next screen select "Install from a list.....(Advanced)"

9. On the next screen select "Don't search, I will choose....." and then click on Next.

10. On the next screen select "HAVE DISK".

11. On the next screen you will need to navigate to the location on your hard drive where the ATI and/or Omega drivers has been extracted. If you're wanting to do this with official drivers, the default location is: C:\ATI\Support\

NOTE: If you have installed previous ATI drivers, there will be several folders to choose from. To get to the CAT 6.5 look for the folder with: "6-5_xp-2k....." Open this folder.

12. Open the Driver folder.

13. Open the 2KXP_INF folder.

14. If you're using Windows XP, select the CX_32464.inf file.

15. Click to Open.

16. Click OK on the next screen.

Follow the prompts to install the drivers and then, WITHOUT REBOOTING, follow the same steps for the SECONDARY device.

Once both of the devices have been taken care of, reboot the system into normal Windows and report the results.

THANKS!!

yeah =)

nice work jxjcksn now lets combine our efforts for a better overview =)

2 persons have Windows File Protection Errors. The log said ati2mtag.sys is "instable" ... In my case I had a ati2mtag.sys "version mismatch" error (i have no system file protection cause of the nlite customized windowsxp as i said before).

All the original Windows XP SP2 users have windows file protection errors (1st stage) and I have the second stage error. You know what I mean?

So if those both erros could be combined in one solution that would be nice =) After that someone should beta test it.

Furthermore I dont think this error will "fly" away after Cat 6.6 will be released, cause I think ATI is reconstructing something =)

During my "very often" reinstall Session i've tried several methods one of them was to install them manually in Safe Mode by selecting the drivers from hand (note i dont have system file protection) but nothing worked. Same Errors, same result, same solution as i posted at Jun 15, 2006 05:21 PM (the long post with a small howto) =)

So I guess we are right on the money then. The issue lies with OUR systems not aloowing those files to be installed and windows file protection replacing them with other versions so what we are getting is a a bunch of mismatched files, so we are getting 640 X 480 @ 4Bit color depth. I think we found the whols problem now we just need to figure out the solution. Great Work. I have been in touch with ATI but they know nothing of this. they just keep sending me different ways to install etc..SO I think they don't know whtas going on yet. Maybe we can fix it and have the solution before they do... Now we can't disable file protection can we? @lucrios, so if you have file protection then what is happening on your end then? SO I gues disabling WFP will not help in this case...

Jepp that's it and you'r correct with saying "how can we fix it" I think ati cant help cause they don't want to AND they where not paid for helping another "driver project" you know what i mean? Furthermore ATI have its own driver set and its own project so they can only answer Ati Catalyst Driver related problems =)

So we must find a solution by ourselfs. After my work i'll install a fresh Windows today on a fresh hard driver. Doing those things i've posted ... in addition ill monitor ALL changes done to this system ... saving the log files for debugging. I hope ill find then a solution. I know that its possible to temporary disable WFP (SFP; System File Protection) cause some installers will do so too, to replace protected files. Without this feature Windows Updaters (KBXXXXXX) can't work cause they will replace protected files =)

So after debugging procedure ill post my results here. Maybe with a solution, but i cant promise =) The goal should be to install the drivers by bypassing SFP and clean existing MS drivers (or to bypass them too) that interfere the driver installation. After that a normal installation is possible.

My goal is to inhibit Windows XP to not use or load its own ATI drivers and tell windows to install the Omega drivers without testing. Ill see if i can do so =)

YEs, But this happens with ALL 6.5 versions so if I install official Cat's it happens aswell, so you can relay the info to ATI. if we can get it to work with one version then it should work with them all. Also is there a reason these won't load? possibly we are being protected? It only happens with 9600 Based boards..so the things is WHY don't they install? is it just a glitch? or is there a reason unknown to us that XP won't let them install. So it is up to you, you can sen this info to ATI, I asked them for help related to this issue and the offical Cat's and I got a bunch of junk back, I know they are only follwing procedure, but I am not a newb and I know how to install drivers.. SO giving me a bunch of different ways to install the same driver won't help the issue, just waste time. That's why I am trying to figure it out myself..with the help of others..I think we have the issue Isolated now just the Procedure. My 2 cents is if we do figure out the fix just keep it for the forums.. The info I got is it's very hard ro disbale the WFP or there is definatley a trick to it..I am still researching..

Have any of you got a Virus program active during installation? If so, try disabling it to see if it makes any difference at all. Also, any other program such as spam protection. Just to see if this has anything to do with the problem.

I have a second computer with an AIW 9600 in it. I hadn't updated the drivers from 6.4 to 6.5 until today.

So far, no trouble at all. But, I had my virus program disabled.

What Chipset does your Mobo Have? -I think the chipset is also a factor for this particular issue.

I think you're right on that account.

I'm using pure Intel-based boards. I quit even trying with VIA some time ago due to a whole lot of issues that caused me to spend more time trying to resolve problems than being able to actually use the computer.

The rig I just installed 6.5 on is a Windows XP Home system on a ABIT BD-7 mobo with a P-4 1.6 GHz and 1 GB of PC2700 RAM.

From the information I have been getting and system spec's I have seen with this particular issue. The KT400 mainboard chipset seems to be involved. Could possibly be coincidence but I don't think so.
