Radeon 9600XT problem. Overheated?

Hi! Somewhat new to all this- just installed Omega drivers for my card yesterday and was mesing around with the settings today. My system:

Athlon 64 3000+
1gb RAM
ABIT NF8-V Motherboard
Windows XP Pro

I enabled the Overdrive setting, only left it on for about 10 minutes, then ended up with a screen like this:

(Click to enlarge. Switched backgrounds to neon green to make it easier to see the problem)

I use dual monitors, so that screenshot has both monitors displayed, the left being the main monitor. As you can see, the right monitor seems to have a lot less of a problem, but there are still some artifacts (i think) on it when you move around, although they are quickly corrected. When the screensaver starts, it's horrible. I have Pipes as screensaver, and you can't tell what it is at all.

Judging from what I can tell from other posts I've found while searching, it looks to me like it might have overheated. Is this it? Also, anything I can do to fix it, or should I start looking for a new card?

Thanks so much! =)

Greetings! And Welcome to Driverheaven!

First off, it's quite possible that the card did overheat during the overdrive experience. Leaving a system during something as crucial as this is not a good idea. (As you've likely already learned. )

Do you know for sure if the default settings for the card are now active...or still using whatever the overdrive did?

What you should do at this time is to uninstall the drivers for the card. Once they are uninstalled, before you reboot the system, go into Device Manager and REMOVE both instances of the Display Adapters. Then, shutdown the system, turn off the power, unplug it for a few moments.

Turn everything back on and let Windows redetect everything. Don't cancel any automatic installations as Windows may/will need to install native VGA drivers first.

IF those artifacts still appear after doing this, then, yes, you're in the market for a new card.

Good luck!

Try plugging in another monitor in and see if the artifacts persists. If it does, RMA the card.

Can you use Overdrive with Omega's? ...I don't believe Overdrive would even be able to do that, it overclocks it like 10MHz

Maybe I'm wrong. But, I thought the Overdrive was a feature of the AMD system. However, I'm not all that familiar with AMD .... only what I've read.

Nope, been a feature of most XT cards since the 9800XT. Its basically overclocking that makes your mind think things are faster, but its on warranty so can't complain.

Subsesquent versions actually are good, you can OC like a regular app (ATI Tool, ATT et all)
