ATI x1600 problem? Unsure of cause
A month ago I upgraded from a 9600 SE to the X1600 Pro. I did the installation correct, and it worked for two weeks without error. I was playing World of Warcraft when the first graphics errors took place. The screenshot might not look severe, but those are hard to base the problem off of because thats a bad angle of what usually is all around me.
http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/9...nshot346ha.jpg http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/6...nshot358vk.jpg I tried to see if the same thing would happen in another game. The only other real game I have that requires a good graphics card is Oblivion, but I was unable to take a screenshot for some reason. Picture of Startup error - thats my desktop, now WoW http://img133.imageshack.us/img133/7...nshot392mw.jpg What happens whenever i have the grey select multiple things draggable thing. http://img159.imageshack.us/img159/3...nshot274xr.jpg This is more WoW screenshots of what happens before crash. http://img159.imageshack.us/img159/7...nshot567zl.jpg http://img126.imageshack.us/img126/8...nshot661ey.jpg http://img420.imageshack.us/img420/1...nshot679pc.jpg http://img159.imageshack.us/img159/2...nshot959wa.jpg http://img159.imageshack.us/img159/4...nshot974su.jpg http://img159.imageshack.us/img159/8...shot1302ag.jpg http://img159.imageshack.us/img159/8...shot1310na.jpg Notice that its not just one frame thats effected, when standing still it will cycle through different error things and will reappear then dissapear and go to a different one but its impossible to record this as whenever i try to on fraps its an instant crash. i would say that card is dying. What temps are you getting idle/load? I take it you've tried the latest graphics drivers. I know it's a pain, but i would RMA that card asap.

Unfortunately I can no longer RMA it as I no longer have the original packaging.
I should also add that there are times that it does its job perfectly, infact it did it for 3 weeks in a row before this started happening again And also i have the latest drivers from Omega. I did do ATI for awhile to see if it worked also. Also temps... how do I measure them? Last edited by Infiniteswg; Jul 12, 2006 at 01:20 AM. |

just looked at the video card during my recent streak of having this not happening, there is a red light going off next to the power cord.
when it does happen, there is no light. |

I was about to take the card out and replace it with my old card, and I was trying to remove it from the slot and the top of the card was SCORCHING hot, as in i got burn marks on my right hand.
its not the card's fault, its the mobo, as there is a heatsink installed two centimeters above the card. is there anyway to make the top of the card as cold as the bottom, or to remove the heatsink without damaging anything, or so counteract the heat from the heatsink? btw i have 9 fans in my case, all of them are planned to have airflow going the same way and an external fan (thats what i call it) that cools down my case when the side panel window is off. http://developer.intel.com/design/mo...865PERL_lg.jpg is what the heatsink-videocard proportions look like. |

that's the northbridge right, you should be able to replace it with an active cooler (nb/chipset fan)
personally, my airflow is a joke & i'd rather have things cool than the air moving efficiently hehe (both sides off...) dust is the only issue... so maybe get a 40mm fan or aim one of your case fans to make some sort of path that blows the nb heatsink from the side so the heat doesnt bunch up on that side the card |

I don't know if this is related to your problem, but I recognize the graphical errors seen in this screenshot above: http://img159.imageshack.us/img159/3...nshot274xr.jpg
I have a 9800 Pro that leaves the same "traces" when I move windows around, right click the desktop and the menu appears and such. It seems it only happens on AMD based machines though. I've tried it on three machines and it never was any problem on my Intel P4 but on two Athlon64 machines (one nForce3 and one ULi chipset). Changing BIOS, drivers or voltage doesn't matter. I can accept that the card is dying, but why is it full of health in the "right" computer? btw, are you sure you need the retail box to rma your X1600? |
