9600 + catalyst 5.5 and above = no go

The problem is this: a few weeks ago a friend of mine gave me his old Radeon 9600 (as a gift for helping him build a new system) which worked fine when I installed it and started up the machine.

The problem started when I tried to install Catalyst 6.6 (I have tried the newly released 6.7 too). After the install, I rebooted windows and when it arrived at the welcome-screen, the screen was totally messed up (picture).

I thought that the card might be broken and asked my friend about it. He said that for some reason, catalyst 5.5 and above don't work on it, only 5.4 and below. I tried catalyst 5.4 and VOILA! it worked perfectly.

Although catalyst 5.4 work perfectly fine with games and such, I would rather use newer drivers. I've searched different forums for a solution to this but haven't found any.

So I ask you, my fellow Driverheaven-members, has anyone come across this problem and found a solution to it?

Need to flash the cards BIOS to a different one.

Would the 9600 be that much different from my AIW 9600? I do have a 9600 Pro that is not in use at the present-time. But, my AIW 9600 is using Omega's 6.03 right now without any problems.

ok guys i am using an old Radeon 9500 @ 9700 Pro @ 345 Mhz / 345 Mhz

after installing the new Omega Driver my fps sank to 50-60 fps in cs 1.6!

i need the omega drivers because of its 9700 mod

wich version of the omega driver would be the best with this old graphic card, cause i dont think that the newest driver is the best for older cards or is it?

my current rig

CPU Typ: AMD Athlon XP, 2200 MHz (12.5 x 176) 2700+
Motherboard: Epox EP-8K3A(+) (6 PCI, 1 AGP, 3 DDR DIMM, Audio)
Motherboard Chipsatz: VIA VT8367 Apollo KT333
Arbeitsspeicher: 1024 MB (PC2700 DDR SDRAM) 1:1
Speicher Timings 2-2-2-6 (CL-RCD-RP-RAS) CR 1
Grafikkarte: RADEON 9500 (Omega 3.8.252) (128 MB) @ 9700 Pro @ 345 Mhz / 345 Mhz

and my fps problem: (800x600 16 bit)

Not sure why other people feel the need to go off topic in this thread. If you have a specific issue NOT covered in this thread then make a new one, or see if its already been mentioned in another thread via the search function.

Different 9600's have different BIOS's some of which require updating to work with newer drivers for various reasons.
