RADEON 8500 just wont have it
Hi I have a serious problem, I have recently got an expanison of dark age of camelot online game called Shrouded Isles, this uses a new graphics engine. My computer easily meets the requirements but this is my problem: I got to SI char selection screen, but when I click on 'create new character' the paper doll image loads up and my screen instantly freezes So I can't make any new chars whatsoever. I can play SI with my previous chars however every 3 to 4 secs the screen freezes for a second or two then carries on. So now with SI I can't play it at all. I tried lowering all the graphical settings but still made no affect I still freeze all the time. I also downloaded new drivers for my video card (also tried every single previous driver and found one that is more stable but problem is still there) and installed Direct X9 but that didn't make any difference eathier. I have also tried the Omega driver of this site.
I am using Windows XP, 64mb Radeon 8500, 2ghz AMD, 380+RAM This is a problem not just with this game, other new games like Delta force Black hawk down does exactly the same. When windows restarts it tells me that the RADEON 8500 couldnt complete a drawing task. I have had this problems for months trying to resolve it (installed new via 4 in 1 drivers, flashed BIOS, every driver tried, DX9 installed). Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this please? All suggestions greatly appreciated. |

This is the error message:
The driver for the display device as unable to complete a drawing operation.. The display driver 8500 seems to be responsible for the instability. I get this message with every single driver. The files at fault are: szAppname: Drivers.Display szAppVer: 1002514C00013A1002 szModName: ati2dvag.dll szModVer: 6.13.10.6118 Offset: AA1A06EA |

Try uninstalling your existing drivers (6118) fully, then install the new Catalyst drivers (6292).
Let me know if that works for you.

If none of you can come up with any suggestions, I have a Radeon 7000 , think I should try that and see if problem still happens? The card might be a bit low grade for the type of games that are failing though

No, I don't think the 7000 would help. Have you tried either Omegadrive or Cyborg's driver sets yet? They seem good at fixing the unfixable for some.

Yeah mate UT2003 does the same along with Delta Force Black Hawk Down. I just used the video options and lowered the 3d acceleration use to about half way down as it said use to correct severe problems and I got the game running for about 30 mins, with the mouse cursor blinking, then it crashed.

Have you tried dropping the hardware acceleration tab one notch? Don't know if it will help but doing this seem to fix a whole bunch of different issues for some people.

might sound a bit obvious m8....but i gotta ask...
what size do u use for the agp aperture in the bios.......if u tried it at 128 mb......it might solve the probs.......dunno other than that...just an idea |

Is the onset of this problem regular? As in, you do a certain thing that triggers the problem, or does it gradually start/get worse with time, with different times depending on the luck of the draw? Are there any directx games that don't see errors? Are you uninstalling old drivers in safe mode before installing new ones? Have you tried isolating hardware? (meaning taking everything non-essential and unplugging it from the comp, then seeing if its fixed, and if it is, slowly adding hardware back in one by one until you see what is causing the problem...)

Hi thanks for help, I have tried 128,64, and even 32 also 4x,2x,1x. The problem happens in certain games not all of them and it is random, sometimes instantly sometimes can go for hours without it happening, and yes I have tried taking this out to see about possible conflicts but makes no difference.

another thing to take into consideration is how much memory resources these games are taking up ...380 mb isnt much memory and those games are very memory intense....just a thought since everyone is speaking about the video card itself....

this might sound a bit daft....but is there any way u could take the card out....and mebbe run it in a m8`s comp....to see if the same probs occur...
then at least u could isolate the problem down to the card itself... just a thought |

The randomness is key...
Treaders,
From what I've read here, the problem is looking most to me like a failing card, since this is happening in a number of different games for you, unless they use the same engine - in which case it may still be the software. Make sure you have the latest DirectX version or maybe even re-install DX to make sure that you don't have flaky files there (or OpenGL files as the case may be). The randomness of the problem though points to bad hardware. Bad software generally gives the same error or failure at the same point of program execution. If subbing another video card doesn't solve the problem after first confirming that your DirectX and/or Ogl files are OK, you may want to get with someone who has the same card and one or two of the same games you're having trouble with to see if the problem is reproducible (Digitalwanderer?). Hope this helps... Swimtech

Hello thankyou for your replys, I have posted on a few technical support boards and I had an email from a guy who told me he had same problem and no matter what he did he couldn't fix it. He said the only way he could get it to work without freezing is to use Rage 3d tweaker and lower the Mhz of the clock speed on the video card. I tried this (lowered from 277 to 261) and NO PROBLEMS! I can now run these games without any freezing all day long. Obviously I am pleased that I can run these games but it makes me wonder about ATI, there technical support basically gave up on me and all I can do to get the card working is to lower the clock speed, this is appauling and I will get a Geforce card next time, (And no I hadnt overclocked my card it was at default settings). I am going to report this to ATI and see what they have to say for themselves.
Again thankyou for all your help. |

RADEON 8500 just wont have it
Just a thought...
What motherboard is the card installed on? I have the same problem with an Apollo Pro 133T based motherboard and 8500 DV Running AGPx2 lessened the problems - but there is something about those 2 bits of hardware that are causing the incompatibilty (be it ATI or VIA) since the non ATI cards I tried do not exhibit the problems described.

RADEON 8500 just wont have it
That's abit worrying really as you have the same issue on the AMD platform running KT133/694 combo
Makes one think the fault lies with VIA's AGP implementation affecting cards that demand a lot of juice given that your 8500 sometimes works For more on this - see these threads (if you haven't already): http://forums.viaarena.com/messagevi...eyword2=radeon http://forums.viaarena.com/messagevi...eyword2=radeon http://forums.viaarena.com/messagevi...eyword2=radeon http://forums.viaarena.com/messagevi...A&keyword2=agp Someone correct me if I'm work but I read somewhere that some ATI drivers disable AGPx4 in the BIOS when a VIA chipset is detected. Even if the BIOS is set to AGPx4, by the time Windows loads the card runs at AGPx2. Somehow the AGPx2 mode is not working correctly and over time errors, lock-ups even BSODS appear under XP. It seems (to me) to be worse after SP1 is installed. 'Windows has recovered from a serious error - Radeon XXXX seems to be the cause of system instability' is what you see each time - NO amount of fixes I have tried cured this (4-In-1's, Latency patches, driver updates etc.) Given up NOW... For me I had 3 fixes: Run an AIW Radeon 32 DDR Switch to a motherboard with an Intel/Non-Via chipset Switch from ATI Guess what I did? Had similar issues with a raft of VIA based boards - not saying they are no good but some of the older generation do have more than their fair share of AGP/PCI issues.

you said you have a 2ghz AMD,, does that mean a 2400+ or a overclocked cpu..
If it's overclocked by FSB then it will most likely increase your AGP/PCI timming causing more stress on your Videocard and other componets. that might also explain why you have to downclock your Videocard for stabiliy.. Or you could just have a card that's dying.. I use to have a 8500 that only work on some games and always freeze on others,, the only fix for it was a RMA. |
