ATI H.264 acceleration question?

So what is the state of ATI H.264 acceleration now?
Do we still need to buy Cyberlink PowerDVD 7 Deluxe to be able to get H.264 contents hardware accelerated? Or is it included in the AVIVO package drivers and can be enabled with WMP10?
I noticed that Videolan and ffdshow also support H.264 contents. Do they also support hardware acceleration with ATI cards?

You don't need Power DVD, you can just get this:

http://www.cyberlink.com/cinema/ati/.../enu/index.jsp

I don't know the answer to question 2. Plus I believe it only works with x1xxx series.

No neither ffdshow nor VLC have AVC hardware acceleration. CoreCodec, the makers of CoreAVC, have said that the next version of the decoder (v1.2) will finally add hardware acceleration. They haven't said anything about which cards will be supported though. Hopefully it'll work on all SM3.0 GPUs from both IHVs. This is good because I believe this will be the first general hardware accelerated AVC decoder that you can use for most anything rather than specific players, dvds only etc.

Thanks.
Yes, I'm getting x1900xt. Actually it's already here but I need to wait for my new mobo and new CPU
Hmm....ATI should've given this kind of codecs for free......I think Nvidia PureVideo is free now.

Hmm.....I thought I read somewhere that it used to be not free but it's free now or included with newer versions of forcewares. Maybe I'm wrong.

So does this mean we cannot get hardware acceleration on media files (not DVD), which are encoded with h.264?

I'm 98% sure that Purevideo is never free except for maybe when Nvidia board partners may choose to include it at their own cost. If it was totally free I don't see why that page would be up at all. The problem with making a DVD decoder free is that the company has to pay for liscensing costs regardless. I don't disagree with the sentiment that you should get something like this with your video card, or at least high end and "all in wonder" type cards.

Not that I'm aware of. But it may be possible with one of the current GPU accelerated AVC implementations. This isn't something I've really looked into, I own a coreavc pro liscense so I've been waiting for 1.2
