Sad The Standard VGA-driver-needed problem

I just recieved my Hercules 3D prophet 9700 in the mail about 5 hours ago and have been tweaking, regediting, uninstalling, installing and cramming my brain with all kinds of stuff to get it to work. All to no avail of course.

My problem seems pretty standard. Halfway through the installation of either the standard Radeon, Hercules, or Omega drivers (after they've been unpacked) I get an error stating that I should try installing standard VGA drivers first. I've noticed a lot of people with this problem and it seems I get stuck just a bit before the rest... either I dont have the standard VGA driver that should come with XP or I'm doing something pretty stupid. (yes, I've done everything in Genius's n00b driver installation and I've tried the search). When selecting a driver to install manually from the windows standard drivers list there are no standard display drivers from which I can select! (but then again if I dont have one installed how on earth can I possibly be viewing this site?)
So now I've ended up with two questions:

Do I really need a standard VGA driver to install the drivers?
If so where can I download one? (supposing I don't have any)

My computer is absolutely wiped clean of any video drivers whatsoever so driver conflicts should be out of the question.
Any help would be appreciated (or links to where I can solve my VGA/ATi problem)
Thanks for bothering to read this!

I had a similar issue, here's what I did :
While installing the Omega drivers I got this message.
I went to the folder on my "C" drive that was created by the omega drivers.
Inside of this folder I found a Win2k/xp folder.
Inside of that folder I found a setup program.
I ran the setup program, rebooted, then ran the initial setup again, and have had no problems...
Note that you might have to do this twice as the card installs both a primary and a secondary adapter...

I can only find a setup in the main Omega folder that is created after unpacking, not a seperate one in the Win2k/xp folder. This setup is the one that is run automatically and generates the VGA error. In the Win2k/xp folder there are only a few executable files none of which are usefull for installation (ATi applications like the Control Panel and Error reporting).

I just tried using the windows device manager and specified the Win2k/xp folder as the folder from which to install the drivers but it gives me an 'invalid data' error after installing. The standard ATi drivers and Hercules drivers give the same error if I try installing through windows driver installations.

Hope to give you some good news

To fix this problem, go to Start, Run... and type "regedit" without the quotes to run the Registry Editor.
Navigate to
HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ENUM\PCI
Now right click on PCI and select “Permissions…”
Now highlight the SYSTEM entry, and make sure that “Allow” is selected for both Full Control, and Read, Now select the “Advanced” button, and in the “Advanced Security Settings” view, make sure that “Replace permission entries on all child objects …” IS selected, and that “Inherit from parent the permission entries …” is NOT selected
Hit “Apply”, then “OK”, and close the various Regedit dialog windows.
Go back to Device Manager, and Select “Reinstall Drivers”, and they should install OK.

As usual when messing with the registry make sure to make a registry backup or create a system restore point.

Great! Thank you so much for that post as I would never have come up with changing reg-key permissions to get professional drivers to install. It's kind of strange that a rare problem like that prevented it. Anyway, thanks again! Your advice worked like a charm and turned an otherwise lousy day into a fruitfull one after all.
