Corrupted image after resolution change
Hey guys,
I have a serious problem with my laptop ACER 5024WLMi, with AMD Turion 64 and ATI X700 mobility. I took my laptop back from the ACER repair center in the UK, where they replaced my CPU, my Mainboard, my HD, and the Cable that connects the LCD to the Mainboard with new pieces. Since then no ATI drivers will work correctly on my laptop (I have tried 50x version sets, with the DH4 Modtool). I got a distorted image whenever I try to change the resolution, which you can see in this thread: http://www.hardwareheaven.com/hardwareheaven-tools-discussion/121172-acer-5024-x700-mod-tool.html. The issue is resolved temporarily, if I put the pc on Standby (blindly), and then wake it up. The ONLY driver set that works correctly, is the one that the laptop came with (Acer's X700 drivers, dated in 2005!!!). Can somebody help me please? I assume that those Acer drivers (which can be found here, FYI: ftp://ftp.support.acer-euro.com/note...driver/vga.zip) are specifically designed for the specific X700 on my mainboard?!?! Any help will be much appreciated. I REALLY want to update my gfx drivers. p.s. b4 you even ask me: yes, I always run DriverCleaner Pro 1.5 in Safe Mode, b4 I install new Ati drivers! and yes, I installed even Omega and Zer0point drivers. Result = same Last edited by hadez; Nov 27, 2006 at 07:29 PM. |

Because the original drivers run correctly, it pretty much narrows it down to a software problem. Its hard telling what the repair techs did. All I can think of is do your normal dhdcpro uninstall and also do a manual cleaning for any leftover registry enties with your favorite registry cleaner. After the standard dhdcpro cleaning there are still registry strings related to ATI. Try to do a fresh install of your chipset drivers before installing your GPU drivers.
Did you have any tweaking apps installed that maybe did not uninstall correctly? You also want to make sure to do a thorough cleanup in the registry for that to if you had one installed. Is your fresh install of your OS from a windows install cd or a image of a previous install on the same system? Last edited by >GSXR<mrbusa; Nov 28, 2006 at 03:15 AM. |

Ok, what I did was that when I took my laptop back, I formatted it, and I installed Windows XP SP2 Home edition from a Windows XP cd (not the Acer cd's), and straight away I installed Catalyst drivers 6.11, 6.10, 6.9. The chipset drivers are included in the Catalyst package (I have a ATI Xpress 200M chipset, and the only driver it needs is the Southbridge, which is included in the Catalyst). I also tried to install earlier versions of the Southbridge with the new drivers. Didn't work. B4 I give my PC for repairs, the Catalyst from ATI were working great on my previous Mainboard/X700. It's weird. I sent an email to Acer, and they told me that the Gfx card should not work with the Catalyst package from ATI, wtf! p.s. -Acer's catalyst, have only 3 resolutions in Windows XP: 800x600, 1024x768, and 1280x800. The problem occurs with the Ati Catalyst even when I switch between those resolutions as well. -I do not have any tweaking apps What do I do? I'm really desperate!

Are there any official ACER forums where you could ask someone with the specific model of you lappy what drivers they use and whether or not they have the official Mobility Catalyst drivers working or not?

I have only found 1 guy that has the same problem as me, and he stopped posting in the thread that I posted in my first post, above.
Just to remind you, before I send the laptop to Acer where they changed my Mainboard and my CPU, the previous X700 was working Albolutely Fine with all the revisions from ATI. Could it be something like a piece of alternative code that Acer has put in their drivers? If yes, could some tech-guy locate it or at least have a quick look at their drivers (posted in a link further up)? I suppose that this could be a challenge for a coder/programmer, to see how can one company modify their drivers to work ONLY with their Mainboard-X700 combination, right? Please help!... |

I feel your frustration. I would be frustrated also.
When there is a problem like this posted I always see posts that suggest having somebody that goes by the nickname " mobility modder ". By the looks of peoples posts there are allot of laptops that need modded drivers for the GPU to be recognized. I am sure you have seen this and do not want to insult you but i will post a link just in case. http://www.hardwareheaven.com/modtool/ |

As you might have seen already in my first post, "Since then no ATI drivers will work correctly on my laptop (I have tried 50x version sets, with the DH4 Modtool)."
One thing though: When I last updated my ATI Catalyst drivers b4 sending the pc to Acer for repair, I used to use DHModTool v3. Using that, everything was working perfectly with my previous mainboard/X700. Silly that I hadnt saved it in my hard Drive, when I got back the lapto pfrom Acer, DHModTool v4 is the only one I can find, and I have this problem by using it. Is there a 1% possibility, that DHModTool v4 can be causing the problem? And, Is there somebody that can send DHModTool v3 to me, to test it with the Drivers? Pleaseee!.... |

Email Patge, thats why i posted the page just incase you downloaded the app from somewhere else or forgot he has a support system. I really have no clue when it comes to a laptop so I am probably not much help. I thought there would be more people helping you by now because of all the problems I have seen like this posted in the past. I did see a couple people on different forums with the x700 card that are having the exact same problems as you. One of them had an LG and one had an Asus which goes to saying that it is not a Acer specific issue.
Here is the page with the LG laptop having issues. When I find the Asus one I will post that also. http://forum.notebookreview.com/show....php?p=1664151 Last edited by >GSXR<mrbusa; Nov 29, 2006 at 04:52 AM. |

Thanks for the posts, nobody has found a solution to the problem yet.
I agree with you, that only somebody that knows about coding drivers can help me out in this one, and only by analysing the Acer drivers, to see where is the difference with the ATI's ones. Any tech guy wanna help us out please?... Thanks in advance |

It's one of those problems that are laptop specific. If you can't get a hold of the mobility modder to mod a set of drivers for your laptop and the mod tool will not work, you are kinda stuck with the latest drivers you find that do work. When you originally posted this I searched around and found people that have laptops that are stuck with drivers that were released by the MFG of the laptop. It's not uncommon for this to be the case and by the sounds of it does not look like it is going to change any time soon.

I understand, but the thing is that there can't be so much of a difference between ATI's drivers and Acer's drivers... A coder that knows about coding of drivers, can examing and compare the two sets of drivers and find the difference I suppose.... Then he could inform us and manually edit ATI's drivers and make it work, right?
I can pay you coders, to look into the matter ![]() And to be honest with yo, If I had any clue of how to do it it wold be challenging for me to see what's wrong, find the problem and fix it! |

If it was easy to use stock Catalyst or Forceware drivers on there systems they would. It costs money to develop drivers and in todays world its all about the greenbacks. I believe the problem is not how the driver interacts with the GPU, but how it interacts with the mobo that is the problem. Every thread in every forum with this type of problem points to one man, Patje. If he can't fix it for you then you are stuck with the latest Acer drivers. The weird thing about your issue is the fact that before you sent your system in for repairs you had official Cat's working. All I can think of is that maybe the new mobo is a newer revision that doesn't like the official drivers. Or that its the GPU that is a different revision or OEM that don't like the drivers. |
