Problems w. displaying certain games in full screen with 64mb Radeon 9500

specs:
gpu: 64mb Radeon 9500 @ default on 3.8.330 Omega drivers
os: xp with sp 2
cpu: xpm2500 @ 200x10
ram: 512mb pc3200 kingston value ram
mobo: nf7s v2
bios: Merlin's Ub3r D25 BIOS CPC On (with cpc off)
display: avitron kds av-7t crt monitor

for some reason, certain games refuse to display correctly on my system; call of duty, counterstrike, other open gl games and chronicles of riddick are all guilty of the following: upon starting the game for the first time, the resolution is set at 640 x 480; at this point, all three games are displaying their menus in full screen. if i set the resolution at 800x600 (lowest resolution i will consider gaming with), the screen flashes to the desktop for a moment and the viewing area becomes as such: with the purple representing what the game thinks the visible screen area is, the blue representing desktop icon size and the grey representing the bezel of my monitor. for reference, here is how it is supposed to look if everything is working right: if i set the resolution at 1280x720 which is my desktop screen resolution, the screen becomes warped as such; for some games, the warping is more extreme: at no selectable resolution is a "full screen" truly realized but the higher the resolution, the lesser the 'dead black space,' thus my only resolution so far (outside of using windowed mode which i find distracting) is to use the highest resolution possible which still leaves me with a black border around the screen (and in the case of chronicles of riddick, gives me about 5fps). i don't find this solution favorable and with your help, i would like to fix this problem once and for all. many thanks in advance!

PS: this is probably related; 1024x768 is the max resolution i can display my desktop at without causing the "displayable area" to shrink as so:

EDIT: icon sizes not in scale

Greetings and welcome to Driver Heaven!

Do you, by any chance, also have the TV OUT option active?

i'm not sure; how do i find out?

i forgot to mention that this problem has persisted over several different sets of drivers, reformats, and both windows 98 and xp. i never really play around with graphical settings to be honest; as long as stuff works, i'm happy. i don't think i ever enabled a tv out option or used a tv output although actually, tv out does sound kind of familiar for some reason.

OK, a couple of things that might be worth trying:

1. Download the latest Nforce2 chipset drivers for your system. This could be a motherboard driver problem instead of a video driver problem.

2. Go into Device Manager and REMOVE all instances of the Monitor. If there happen to be multiple instances, remove them all -- including Plug n Play. Reboot and let Windows redetect your monitor.

If the problem persists, let us know.

Good luck!

Is it possible for you to borrow another monitor and test it? Would like to try to determine whether it's the monitor itself or the system.
