Getting x1600p to work under W98
Hi, everyone!
I've got a problem: i need to get the radeon x1600 pro (agp) to work under windows 98, but i've encountered a slight problem: ATI doesn't have any drivers for it. Is it possible to get it to render at least 2d graphics (high res and color) in win98 or is it a hopeless try? Just forcing some other card's drivers didnt work - is it possible to modify them in some way? Otherwise, the computer is running XP - one way would be to use virtual machine, but the installation of the w98 gets a culture shock from the new virtual devices and offers a windows protection error. Googling led to almost nowhere - some people had the same trouble, but they couldn't figure much out. Thanks for all your feedback and ideas! paul |

I was dragged into the XP environment kicking and screaming all the way. But, once I finally got XP, it wasn't long before I left 98 in the dust. The possibility of getting the newer cards to work on an older OS probably involves editing some .inf files to include the video card. "Maybe" if you provide the actual Hardware ID of the card, something can be done. I just don't know why you'd want to. ![]() Cheers! |

I remember what problems I have had a few years ago with the Windows 98SE running Radeon 9500. I installed all the latest drives and the system was still unusable (random freezes and resets). That forced me to install XP.
I don't give the X1600 much chances of working under W98.

Hi again!
Thanks for the input! I too gave my three drops of blood to the XP some years ago, however, due to Adobe Pagemaker not completely understanding character tables in XP (some certain letters get messed up in documents), i've got to have the 98 at hand as well. Yeah, i know, the PM is also discontinued and aging, but that's not up to me ![]() Guess my best bet is downgrading to a card generation older or getting a cheapo w98 computer? |

I'm reluctant at the present to upgrade completely to VISTA due to many devices still not having drivers for them. Example: My UMAX 4000U legal size flatbed scanner. I was told by a UMAX PR person that they may not even consider making drivers for the products for VISTA and that I should stick with XP....at least for now. I just checked yesterday again and there are NO VISTA drivers, PERIOD, for any of their scanners. But, I, too, have the older Adobe programs and still like them for what I can do with them. I just haven't worked that much with PageMaker, so, I don't know what exactly it is that's causing the problem under XP. I take it there are no patches? One other option may be to install an older PCI video card in your current system and boot into 98 using that card when needed. Don't know how desperate you are, though. ![]() Good luck! |
