Slow performance on 9800pro (omega 3.8.330)

Hi all,

Running the Omega 3.8.330, on an ATI9800pro (on Win2k) I get *very* low fps on some heavy openGL applications. For example, running this screensaver runs so slow that I see it frame by frame : http://www.reallyslick.com/oldsavers/euphoria2.zip

This screensaver is so OpenGL intensive, that I have used it over the years as a litmus test. If it does not run smooth, then it means that the display driver is either poorly configured or just not sitting properly.

Does anyone have an 9800pro on a Win2k with the 3.8.330 drivers ? If so, does the Euphoria saver run smooth on your system and what driver settings do you use ? (when the saver is running please press the 's' key to toggle some on-screen statistics ... I get an fps = 1.96 )

Many thanks
Thomas

Greetings and welcome to DriverHeaven!

The screensaver is very pretty and runs nicely on my own rig. However, I'm using the official CAT 7.4s at present and a much newer card than the 9800 series.

But, it would be most helpful if you'd provide much more detail about what else you have in your PC. Just knowing that you have a 9800 doesn't give us enough to begin helping you.

BTW: Pressing any key just stops the screensaver and puts the system back to the Desktop.

Thank you for the welcome ... and I am glad you like the saver.

About the system. Is the following information a little more useful ? -->
The ironic thing is that if I downgrade back to the orignal drivers (I believe it was catalyst 5.4 or so and go back to the old VIA 4-in-1 everything runs smooth again. Evry other driver combination gives me reduced performance. The problem is that one of my main applications is now using some openGL functions that are not supported by the old drivers, so I am forced to update. Now if only it was possible to figure out why the new drivers give poor performance)

Bad news: We've had so many posts here in DH about problems with that chipset and ATI cards that it's no longer funny. AND, in my own experience with VIA chipsets I have made the decision about 3 years ago to never, ever again buy a motherboard that uses VIA.

If you do a Search for K8T800Pro you'll see what I'm talking about. AND, you just might come across a cure for what ills you're having.

All I can do at this point is wish you a LOT of luck!

Yeah, I am having all kinds of problems with this chipset. It is the crappiest thing. Not too long ago I was trying to figure out why I can't get any SMART data out of my SATA drives. It turns out the chipset is so poor, that it will not allow it.

I will follow your suggestion about searching the forums in regards to this chipset ... and as you say I will never get VIA again no matter how good the specs might look on paper !
