Not Retaining Settings?

Every since the CAT 7.4's, I have noticed that when my computer boots, it defaults to 16 bit colors and 60Hz refresh rate. My normal settings are 32 bit and 75 Hz. I can reset to the normal settings manually and they hold until the computer is re-booted, but after a re-boot, we're back to 16 bit and 60 Hz.

Anyone have any thoughts on this one, I have never had this problem before in this 4 year old system. Nor, have I changed any windows settings of which I am aware.

Suggestions appreciated.

System Details:

gigaByte 8INXP; P4 3.06HT.

2G PC 266 DDR
TurtleBeach Santa Cruz sound

Anyone?? Help? This is really annoying. Since I posted the above and updated to the June 7 DirectX 9.0C update, I have also noticed that on irregular occasions, my D3D appears to be disabled. Consequently, neither FS9 nor FSX will start. A reboot seems to resolve this at least temporarilly, but I would like to resolve this issue.

Would really appreciate some help.

Thanks,

Greetings!

I do recall reading your OP, but, didn't have anything I could think of at the time to offer as help. However, with the addition of your second problem, I have to wonder if your CMOS battery is dead. It's the nickel-sized battery that goes on the motherboard. Seeing that the system is '4 years old' that would make the battery suspect.

Good luck!

Question: did you do a cleaning of the old drivers with Driver Cleaner? If so, to be on the safe side you may want to reinstall your motherboards chipset drivers, and then try reinstalling your video card drivers, especially if you chose to clean out the IGP drivers.

Another possibility is that your registry is getting corrupted, or something along those lines. You may want to clean out the registry of useless junk using a tool like CCleaner.

Thanks for the thoughts. I had not thought of the CMOS battery although when I have had this issue before I usually had boot problems and the date and time settings would not be retained which isn't the current problem.

I did use DriverCleaner Pro when I installed the latest version. I routinely run CCleaner almost daily before shutting down for the night. I also have WinRescueME XP version which I can run.

I am beginning to think that this is some sort of individual quirk with my system and the later version of the CCC which is partially why I posted the problem to see if I should pass it to ATI.

Thanks for the help, any further suggestions welcomed and appreciated.

Yes, usually, if the CMOS battery is dead, the date/time and settings also get reset. But, usually, that only happens if you power down and unplug the system. As long as the PC is plugged in, the motherboard can still get enough power to keep the settings.

You may be right about it just being something unique to your system. From my experience with the 7.5 drivers, there's not that much to consider. If they aren't working properly, I'd recommend just going back to the 7.4 drivers. In fact, I'm using Omega's based on 7.4 now.

Good luck!

Just to Update: Attention Catalyst Maker

Just update and perhaps clarify my situation, I have identified the culprit as the latest version of the Catalyst Control Center. I managed to actually check the settings prior to CCC loading this morning and Windows loaded the correct settings ( 75mHz refresh rate and 32 bit color). I then saw CCC load and the settings were changed after that.

I would stress that after the CCC changes are undone, everything appears to function normally. The problem on seems to appear from a re-booting of the system ( hot or cold).

I still have no idea as to why CCC is doing this, but I would certainly consider this a "bug" and hopefully Catalyst Maker will notice this thread and comment.

As always, any thoughts or suggestions appreciated.

I suggest you go ahead and fill out a trouble report to ATi about this rather than hope it gets seen. Nice bit of troubleshooting, though.

You can also stop CCC from loading on startup. In fact, as I don't change my settings very often, that's what I've done. It's easy enough to start it manually when I need it.

I thought that I would just post an update in essence to close the thread unless there are further comments.

J Rosenfeld's solution, not allowing CCC to load, does in fact solve the problem as far as my system is concerned. It appears that once I have updated my video drivers, and configured the desktop, I can close the CCC and still have the videocard settings (AA, that sort of thing) retained. Hence I only need to open CCC if I need to change something which I seldom do.

The thing which I think is important here is that the culprit is very definitely the CCC and I think that this does spotlight that issue.

I have reported the problem to both ATI and the CAT Team.

Thanks to all for their help.
