back to 85Hz every time I switch resolutions

Hi guys,

need advice with this weird problem:

When I switch resolutions (WinXP control panel or CCC) my custom refresh rate settings are lost.
E.g., I configured 1280x1024 for 100Hz (screen confirms this). When I switch back and forth, XP comes up with 85 Hz (not just the screen, the control panel setting is also 85 Hz).

I have Catalyst 7.6 and a iiyama Vision Master 451.
Some more background info:
When I frist installed the screen with a D-SUB cable it got detected properly but it refused to switch to higher rates than 60Hz. I had to disable EDID support in the ATI driver to set sth higher. This is not the problem I'm facing now.

To really disable the influence of the DDC, I use now a BNC cable. I tried uninstalling the iiyama monitor driver but still the thing is that 85Hz is set by Windows whenever I switch resolutions. I can set it back to 100Hz or so but I have to do this every time again.

Both ATI and iiyama support never faced this problem it seems.

I wouldn't want to use Reforce, just because I had some problems with some games which offer in-game refresh rate settings: Reforce deletes all settings except for the highest possible refresh rate and the games wouldn't launch any more then.

The problem started with this screen. Before I had a Hyundai and everything was fine. I believe it had been introduced by this monitor driver but I can't get rid of it any more. iiyama just said that 85Hz was the default setting but it shouldn't loose my custom settings upon switching....

Can anyone point me to the registry entries where the refresh rates can be found?

Thank you!

It shouldn't matter really.... 85Hz is actually more comfortable for your eyes on average than 100Hz is, not to mention that 85HZ should be better on your monitor's lifespan

I was actually thinking the same thing. I use 85Hz on purpose and find there's not any significant difference (to me) between that and 100Hz.

So, redheat, do you actually notice a difference between the two?

One thing you might try, now that you have the video drivers installed, is to go to Device Manager and REMOVE the Monitor from the list. In fact, choose to Show Hidden Devices and REMOVE any and all instances of monitors from the list.

Reboot and let Windows redetect your current connected monitor/s. See if that fixes your problem.

Thanks all for considering my post.

Regarding the difference in the refresh rates, I can understand that there is not much a difference between 85Hz and 100Hz at the desktop resolution. But I notice a difference between let's say 85 and 160Hz which the screen can do at 800x600 or between 85 and 120 at 1024x786 (my preferred gaming resolution). These settings are just not stored.

I found this really weird text describing shortcomings in Windows XP.

It says that it is actually NORMAL for Windows to go to the default of 85 Hz upon switching the resoltion, i.e., to forget what the user had set it to.

How come I never had this problem before? Must be that the Hyundai driver had magically fixed this in some way.

Oh well, if this is true I guess I have to rely on one of the many tools available to fix it.

Since I actually choose 85Hz @ 1280x1024, I haven't detected a problem.

Now, as to 'why' Windows may do this: It's quite possible that it's by design in order to keep a monitor from being forced to use a refresh rate beyond its capability. More of a protection decision. Say, for example, a user switches monitors without changing that refresh rate and the new monitor can't work with it. This allows the system to use a default refresh rate so that the monitor can display properly. Just a thought.

Yes, dyre, this is meant for protection, I agree.

But on the other hand, once you have chosen a refresh rate that works for you, shouldn't Windows remember that setting?
If you chose a too high rate you would notice right away after clicking OK I guess because of a blank screen and you would press ESC and then not use the setting. There is no need for it to switch to the default every time.
