ATI + Omega Drivers (x1650)

I just bought an VGA Sapphire X1650 from Newegg.com. To my best understanding, the driver that came in the CD with the product is outdated (Cat. 6.4 I think). Therefore, I went on ATI's website and downloaded the latest driver for the card, which is the Catalyst™ 7.8. However, after installing the driver, restarted, and logged back into Windows, I see corruption (flashing screen, missing textures, missing icon images, low performance, and many other graphical problems) on the screen. Also, once I restarted the second time, my PCjust went into LIKE a safe mode...with 800x600 res with minimal colors...and I couldn't change back to my orignial settings. I've tried older Cat versions and Omega Drivers. They work. However, I still experience the same very low performance. I tried Silkroad Online (does anyone play it?) and the performance is very choppy, very low framerate. I've asked around a lot and many X1650's users seem fine with the new driver(cat 7.8) and very pleased with the card performance. I'm just wondering why I have this problem. Do I have a bad card?

Did you unistall any existing video drivers that you have first? If so, maybe a bad card. I would try unistall all drivers and than reinstall.

Greetings and welcome to DriverHeaven!

First of all, there's a lot of information missing from your trouble report. OS? CPU? Motheboard? Type of video card: AGP? PCI Express? RAM? type and amount? etc.

At any rate, if that card is an AGP version card, there have been many numerous reports of problems using the 7.8 drivers with AGP cards. It's best to use the 7.7s or earlier for now. Hopefully, ATI/AMD will get the AGP support restored in the upcoming drivers.

Good luck!

Hey there ^_^ I've had exactly the same problem (Sapphire x1650pro AGP card here), but for me it turned out that installing the 7.8 drivers turned off PCI reads and writes and AGP reads and writes. Maybe if you can manually enable them again it could work. It didn't want to let me turn them back on, but my mainboard is ages old, so it could work for you. No guarantees of course, but worth a try ^_^ That could also explain your low performance for the older drivers, if the reads and writes stayed turned off.

I had these exact same issues, but after some 'tinkering' i got them fixed. Then I installed Battlefield 2 and it destroyed my settings.

Thanks for the 7.7 tip, thats my next step.

Hi,

Can you try Catalyst 7.3 or older on your AGP system, please?

My X1650 Pro AGP works only fast with Catalyst 6.12-7.3. If I use Catalyst 7.4 or later I get a massive performance drop.

Spooky
