Problems with ATI 7.8 and texture acceleration

I have an x1650
I recently decided to upgrade my drivers to 7.10, but the dxdiag direct3d tests failed at step 8, same with 7.9.
On 7.8 the tests run but I dont see the spinning cube, and it shows texture acceleration as being unavailable.
I currently have ATI tray tools installed which says the AGP speed is 8x, fast writes are on, but regular read and write are off.
I'm also getting a few graphical bugs (mainly icons missing/disappearing)
I've also tried the two latest omega drivers to no avail.

Should I go back another driver version or is there something I can do from here?

Beginning with CAT 7.7, there have been issues with the drivers and AGP cards. Some have found the newest CAT 7.10s are working for them. So, if your card is AGP, and you can't get these working, it's advised to revert to CAT 7.6 for now.

You can also try reinstalling your motherboard chipset drivers and then do the DirectX update from Microsoft's Windows Downloads.
