need help connecting new element hdtv 19" hdmi port to ati 9800xt dvi-i port

Ok, it looks like my 9800xt is crashing since it just recently started not displaying from the vga output to my new element electronics 19" hdtv. I bought it back in 2004 brand new but I have played a lot of RTCW and I guess its time has come and it just shows black with a white line on the far left when trying to view via the vga port now. I have ordered a new x1650 512MB from tigerdirect, but just started to come up with the idea of trying to get the 9800xt to work via the dvi-i port. In the meantime I am using my brothers nvidia garbage card and it hooks up through the vga to my element tv. I bought a hdmi to dvi cable and hooked that up to the 9800xt but the element says "not supported". I'm wondering if there's any way to get this to work or maybe I am doing it right, but the 9800xt has crashed on the dvi-i port as well. Keep in mind that I did hook up an s-video cable to the element and the display was very blurry even though it did show picture that was negligible.

any ideas would be appreciated

Welcome to DriverHeaven!

If you're using CCC, you likely need to click the option to Force TV. And then you need to go into the Advanced settings and select the appropriate HD format. (Usually, 1080i.)

Let us know if this helps or if you continue to have problems.

Good luck!

My problem is that I can't use the monitor right now at all so ccc installation doesn't see the card since I can't use the card and try to install the ccc with the card in it. I think I'll go down and buy an s-video cable tomorrow and try to install the ccc then. Even tho the screen is blurry, I think I can still see the screen therefore I can probably get the install to work. Then I will do what you said and then try out the setting you suggested.
