Help: can't switch to Dell 1905FP w/ Lid closed (Radeon 9500)

I have an IBM Thinkpad T42 with a Radeon 9500 video card. I had been using the ATI/IBM drivers with this laptop to drive the subject Dell monitor (1280x1024) through the port replicator (DVI), for about 1.5 years at work, no problems. Recently, I bought a widescreen flat panel for home, which native is 1680x1050, and the ATI/IBM driver wouldn't allow me to drive that. So, I installed the OmegaDrivers ... everything works great at home: install the laptop in the port replicator, it finds the monitor and switches over to 1680x1050.

The problem is now at work. If I reboot/power on with the unit in the port replicator, everything goes fine (logon, etc.) until right after logon when it looks like the resolution is switching: at this time, the Dell goes blank and the "active" light goes yellow, which i assume the monitor is no longer getting signal. If I open the laptop display, the laptop display is active, but I have to manually switch over to the Dell external display (previously using "switch displays" or something in the Omega Drivers: until i upgraded to the latest version ... the latest version i don't seem to be able to do this).

However, if I boot with the laptop screen open, this doesn't happen, and it stays with the Dell monitor: this works fine except i have to keep the lid on the laptop open. The problem with this is when i forget, or, when i don't reboot: e.g., don't shutdown at home and just throw it in the port replicator at work ... i would think this would be possible? Anyways, that's what i did this morning, and i got to the point where i need to figure it out because i have to reboot to get my flat panel working and that annoyed me just enough.

Anything anybody can do would help! Thanks in advance!

BTW - after upgrade to the latest version, MultiRes shows up in the tray, but ATI tray tools does not ... double-clicking on the ATI tray tools desktop shortcut gives me: "Wrong version of low level driver found" ... "please uninstall ...". I uninstalled, restarted, then re-installed ... same problem! Thanks again.

System Specs

this forum is usually active, maybe people have work & stuff (including me)

this may be better in the laptop forum... but then again, it's a bit more driver related

9500 sounds old, maybe ATT or ati's drivers dont support it anymore, i'm seeing only down to 9600 on ati's dload site for mobility

maybe try 6.5 cats/omegas just in case

i've had that ATT issue once before (& a horrible time figuring out what was going on), not sure of my cause (either a vnc app, agp issues, or running att on 2 xp accounts at once)

let's hope someone else has experience/ideas, odd that it took almost a week
