I was having the same problem with the Zero Display Service Error.

To get rid of it, uninstall CCC (if you are using it) or ATI Tray Tools and the ATI Display Driver from the Control Panel.

Reboot into safe mode and run Driver Cleaner. Make sure you select Multiple Filters and select all the ATI options.

After it has cleaned out the drivers, make sure you clean out your Temp folder and make sure to delete any ATI folders in your Program Files.

Go to your system32 directory and go to View -> Customize Details -> Check the box next to "Company"

Then go to View -> Details

Look for any entries that have ATI Technologies Inc and delete them.

Do the same for system32/drivers folder.

Then run a registry cleaner such as RegCleaner and delete any ATI entries.

After that, reboot normally and install your ATI driver or whatever driver you are going to be installing.

By doing this, I was able to get rid of that error. Hopefully this helps you out with that. Let me know if you have any questions.

You mean I have to pay for a tool that ATI should provide to make their drivers install?
Sounds pervert to me

I am not going to spend even $10 just to find out it possibly does not help. Too much risk!

Btw, the problem even happens on a clean XP installation.

EDIT: Installed XP SP3 RC2 - The driver 8.2 installs now BUT CCC does no longer start :/

You don't have to buy DriverCleaner. You can still clear out the files manually, it just takes a little bit more work. ATI has an uninstall guide which tells you how to manually remove ATI files and registry keys.

I'm not sure what to say about the clean XP install since I did not reformat my computer to get rid of the error.

Apparently Microsoft's .NET framework is incompatible with SP3
"Paint.net" doesn't start neither.

Yeah, once you have a working (older) CAT installation updates certainly are less complicated but you are damned when doing a clean install it seems.
