performance problems with Ragnarok

I've been lurking dh.net and other forums quite for a while and didn't find a solution to my problem.

I'm using the MSI-brandend Ati Radeon HD 2600 Pro (512MB) videocard on my pc (Athlon 64 3200+, Abit AV8 3rd-Eye Mainboard, 1GB RAM, WinXP SP3).

I have NO bluescreens and no driver problems except this one:
The DirectX 7 game Ragnarok Online never has more than 20 FPS on my computer. Even with my old videocard I always had more than 60 FPS, with my new one I have only 8 - 20 FPS. I should have more than 100, because Ragnarok is a real old game.
I heard of some other players that this has to do with the bad AGP implementation in the Catalyst drivers, so I tried the following drivers:
  • original driver from CD
  • newest MSI driver
  • ATI Catalyst 8.7
  • ATI Catalyst 8.7 + Hotfix
  • latest Omega drivers
  • NGO (didn't recognize my card)
  • ATI Catalyst 8.8 Beta

None of the drivers had more FPS. This is very strange, because I'm able to play new games (e.g. Team Fortress 2) and old games (e.g. Starcraft) without any problems.

I would be REALLY thankful if anybody has any ideas, proposals or even a solution.

Thanks in advance,

Max

Hello there Max, welcome to our forums.

That certainly sounds like a fault in the game's code. I probably cannot access the GFX RAM or initialize hardware rendering at all. I can recall popular games like Diablo 2 not being able to start when you were using a GFX with more than 64MB's of RAM or Unreal Tournament 2003 not being able to start with a new series of GFX cards a few years back. Patches always were the solution to such problems, are there any available for the game you mentioned?

You could also try and start the game into compatibility mode and emulate an older OS. That worked in some cases.

System Specs

try running it through 3danalyze .: ToMMTi-Systems :: Hinter den Kulissen moderner 3D-Hardware :. & play with the cap/emulation options

i've gotten fable to run on a geforce2 when it wasnt supported, maybe this could work backwards
