Sad Every Game freezes

Hi everyone

First of all im going to post my SystemSpecs:

Intel P4 3, 06 Ghz
Asus P4PE MoBo (BIOS Version 1006 Beta)
1024MB Infineon DDR RAM 333
HIS ATI Radeon 9700pro (Catalyst 3.4 + Control Panel)
2x Seagate Barracude IV 80GB 7200rpm
NEC 1300A DVD Writer
LiteOn 52x CD-Writer
Enermax 460 Watt Power Supply Unit
WinXP Prof. + SP1

Ok, i switched to the 3,06 Ghz P4 some days ago. Before i had 2,53 Ghz P4...
After i changed the processor i had massive problems with the stability of my Windows. Everything was running pretty slow. I need around 10 Minutes to copy 500 MB from Partition D: --> E: (i.e.)
Ok, i tried 3 times to repair my WinXP with the original CD... Result --> Nothing

Yesterday i formated my Drive D: (On C: i have winME) and i did a complete new installation of my windowsXP
The only Drivers and Software i have installed right now are:

- Intel Chipset (newest Version)
- Intel Application Accelerator (newest Version)
- SoundMAX Driver
- Catalyst 3.4 + Control Panel
- Asus BIOS 1006 Beta
- DirectX 9

Here is my Problem:

Everytime when i start a game or benchmark program, the whole computer freezes. You'll see one of the first frames and after that everything crashed I even cant go back to the Desktop nor ctrl+alt+del
It only happens when i try to play a game or run a benchmark tool
Applications are running fine and the windows is stable too.

Here is what i tried so far:

- checked the temperature (i have a thermaltake case with 5x case fan, Swifttech CPU Fan)
- checked the RAM Modules
- dxdiag (no problem at all)

I have tried these Games/Tools so far:

- Rainbow Six: RavenShield (crashes)
- Project I.G.I. 2 (crashes)
- GTA: Vice City (crashes)
- 3DMark 2001 (crashes immediately)
- 3DMark 2003 (crashes immediately)
- Collapse II (works fine but its only a Shockwave Game)
- MoHAA: Spearhead (works fine but MoHAA Standalone doesnt work)

Why the hell does Spearhead works and not the other Games?

Any clue whats wrong here or what i can try to fix this problem? Im pretty pissed now because my system was running pretty well for over a year. The Problems started when i updated my "old" 2,53 Ghz to the new 3,06 Ghz (FSB 533)

Please help me

A few questions;

1. When you formatted, did you also delete the partition on the disk?
2. Do you have HyperThreading enabled or disabled?
3. Have you tried using a official BIOS?

First of all....thank you for answering to me

1. I did not deleted the partition. My WinXP is installed on Partition D:\
I just formatted D:\ and after that i installed winXP in there

2. I have HyperThreading enabled in the BIOS

3. I have tried the official 1005 Version but it still freezes. So i thought i could try some newer one

Thanks in advance

Well, I would try disabling HT, just out of curiousity.

If I were you I would do another format, but it probably won't help anything, if you are willing to, then I would try it.

Disabling HyperThread doesnt help

3DMark was running some seconds longer as before but then crashes again.

Question:

Why would you format again? And do you recommend to delete the partition before reinstalling windowsXP again?

Any other clue?

The partition could be corrupt and corrupting your Windows installation.

You cannot install Windows then delete the partition. You have to delete the partition, create a new one, format and install Windows.

Don't do it just yet though, wait for other board members to respond, they might have a better solution for you.

since this problem started when only changing the cpu, chances are that is where the problem is. I would open it all up again and check the thermal paste and heat sink are all on fine. You said you checked the temp but did not say what the cpu temp was? what is idle temp and what is full load temp?

also, did you go back into BIOS and set your settings? I know on AMD if I replace my CPU it can default back to a 100mhz fsb. Check that your BIOS looks right... don't think thats it with a hard lock but still worth checking

System Specs

How old is the board? Because 3.06Ghz is only supported since PCB revision 1.02 maybe you have 1.01 or 1.00 and that explains the problems. Open the case and look on the board there should be something like rev. 1.0* If you can find it what revision is it?

It works now
Thanks to everyone who tried to help. My Local Hardware Dealer told me, that it is important to install software in the right position like

WinXP -> Intel Chipset -> Intel App. Accelerator -> ATI Driver -> Ati Control Panel

I installed the ATI drivers always first.

Again, thanks to everyone for trying to help me

Does anyone knows how many Benchmark Points are normal with my Computer Specifications??

Im not an overclocker and so i got the following results:

3DMark2001 = 15109 Points
3DMark2003 = 5072 Points

I really would like to install the hacked catalyst drivers....but im afraid now

I'd say you're right on target there m8! If I were you though, I would make a drive image RIGHT NOW of your brand new clean OS. Just create it on another old hdd or on a separate partition on your current hdd. Then you'll always only be a few mins from a fresh working OS install
