Radeon problem with Corel Painter?

Hi Everyone, tips hat to admins,
hope you're all happy and stuff,
first post - woohoo, - n alla that,
OK, I've got a new graphics card - believe it or not a mouse crept into the machine one night and pissed on the last one.....I'm just glad the splashback didn't fry the motherboard / hard-drives too,

trouble is everytime I start opening a big file - 190 Mb approx 6 layers - in Painter, the whole machine blackscreens, - not a problem on the old card btw
which was a Matrox something on NVidia software.

setup now is :-

ATI Radeon x1950 Pro agp 512 mb
Catalyst control centre + ati drivers (dont worry, I'm upgrading these)
Corel Painter IX
windows XP
direct x 9.0 and Open GL 5.1
2 Gb sdram
P4P800 Asus pentium 4
intel celeron 2.5 Ghz
550 watts power supply
2 x dvi outputs to 2 x samsung syncmasters *193P and 193T
wacom intuous 3

I'm not that mechanically minded, so if anyone can make a suggestion or spot the flaw or ghost in the machine, I would be very grateful for advice,
cheers

System Specs

Did you completely uninstall the old nvidia drivers?

What version of ATI drivers are you using? For that card I'd suggest Cat 7.11, nothing newer than that.
