Larger Desktop than 2048x1536?
Hi. I have a Lenovo notebook with X1400 mobility radeon graphics. I have gone into the Catalyst Control Center and selected "List all possible modes (including panning modes)". So I can now enable an extra large desktop of 2048x1536 that I can pan around. (My LCD resolution is 1400x1050)
Is it possible to setup a larger desktop? I would like to setup a desktop of 3072x2304. Is there anyway to do this? Through the ATI CCC, or Registry hack, or third-party software, or whatever. |

EDIT: Actually, after doing a little research, I found this.... "2560x1600 is the highest resolution supported by graphics cards and monitors...."

Re: Larger Desktop than 2048x1536?
technically not....
while the largest available single screen monitor is 2560x1600 ATM (aside from the 2160p monitors which are very very nice... and expensive 4320x2160 anyone?).... the matrox dual or triple head to go adapter proves that while an ati card (not sure about current ones) is maxed @ 3840x1024, the nvidia cards were able to surpass this. Now a panable custom resolution is questionable for your current screen..... course i've never understood the need to do something like this, however, i don't see why anything would be different if you got a custom resolution utility and then the drivers continued to handle the panning.... unless it's hard coded.

Why do you want to pan in the first place? Would many virtual desktops be good for what you need? Before, in XP, you could use nview with an nvidia card to make many virtual desktops.

Re: Larger Desktop than 2048x1536?
Thanks for the replies.
I downloaded powerstrip but was unable to set a resolution of 3072x2304 - it just didn't appear. So I tried some lower settings. Couldn't get 3008 or 2944 across but it did take 2800x2100 (which is 2x the native display size in each direction). Also got 2880x2160. Not sure if it is a software/driver type limit or a hardware limit? The reason I am trying to set such a large resolution is so that I can do some screen dumps and then print them. Hence wanting something up around 6-7MPixel (3072x2304). Performance (or useability) aren't really an issue. Might be a better way of doing it...? |

Re: Larger Desktop than 2048x1536?
is this from a game?
If it's an unreal based game.. you could use what is called the Tiledshot command followed by a factor. AKA, a command such as "tiledshot 4" when running 1920x1080 would results in a 7680x4320 BMP being dumped..... however it would also require that you disable the hud/gui of the game or else you end up with a mess

Re: Larger Desktop than 2048x1536?
Didn't get any further than 2880x2160 with the Radeon X1400 in my notebook.
Out of interest I tried an old computer at work which has an NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 4000 64MB card. Its also got an old monitor on it at the moment so not very well setup, but I added an external TV via SVideo, setup a cloned display, and can get a 4072x4072x32bit pannable display happening on the TV! I was hoping to be able to do a screen dump but only get a 1bit B&W screen dump. I have to do more testing but suspect it is a limitation to do with video ram. I did a quick calc and the 4072x4072x32bit display takes about 63.2MB (out of 64MB). Maybe I need to be using less than half the video ram (say 30MB)? Does PrintScreen dump to video ram before going to the clipboard? Or is it something to do with double buffered display? |
