Unable to install Driver for Radeon 9800 under WinXP
I am using the ATI RAdeon 9800 SE with XP Home Edition Service Pack 3.
I don't know since which time my Graphic-Card has only the VGA-Driver. I attracted attention to, because my Video WinDVD does not start since a few days. My be since installing Service Pack 3 for XP. Now I tried installing several drivers with and without Catalyst CCC in different versions. Before installing I cleaned up all drivers with Driver Cleaner in secure Mode. I uninstalled all .NET Framework-Versions and installed new from Version 1.1 to 3.5 including all Service-Packs. Catalyst CCC I can install in Version 8.11 but then doesn't start when I go to Start->Programms. Version 8.12 brings an error-message during setup prozess: "Setup was unable to find components that can be installed on your current hardware or software configuration." I tried to install only the ATI driver in Version 8.11 or 8.12. There comes no error message but the setup prozess stops without Comment. I tried install Omega Drivers 7.12. But when i go to start->Programms->Omega Drivers->Install Omega Drivers the ATI Setup Routine comes and brings the same Error "Setup was unable to find...." What components are missing? Is there a problem with Servicepack 3? Is my Graphic-Card to old for the new drivers? Perhaps the Problem with WinDVD has nothing to do with the Driver? I seeked for the german Error-Message and found some remarks, that i must use a new driver for grafik card. But perhaps I should seek for a new Video Programm. Who can bring me into the Driver Heaven? ![]() Best Regards, Maria_L |

Re: Unable to install Driver for Radeon 9800 under WinXP
you can try manually installing the drivers
goto start>run>type in devmgmt.msc and press enter>display adapters>rightclick on your video card and goto update driver>install from a list>don't search i will choose>have disk>by default ati drivers are in C:\ATI\support\version number\Driver\XP_INF, browse to that folder and select the .inf file (something like CA_72273.inf)>it should show a list of radeon cards look for the 9800 and press next>see if it gives any errors i like using mplayer for videos/dvds MPlayer - The Movie Player SMPlayer - General Info Media Player Classic - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The KMPlayer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia VLC media player - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Quintessential Player - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia |

Re: Unable to install Driver for Radeon 9800 under WinXP
Thankyou for the tipp with the devmgmt.msc.
But I have a Problem to find my video card. There are are no entries to ATI RAdeon 9800 SE, but a lot of other Entries: The Entries are in German, I try to translate: Audio- Video- and Gamecontroller - Audiocodecs - Legacy-Audiodriver - Legacy-Videorecorder - ProVideo Proteus (7134) WDM Video Capture - PorVideo WDM TVTuner (FM1216ME) - SigmaTel C-Major Audio - Videocodecs I don't know for which device I have to install the Driver? And why is there no entry for my ATI Radeon Card? Perhaps I have no ATI-Card? I think I have, because it is written in the invoice from my computer dealer. Perhaps this is the problem? ![]() Yesterday I found the VLC media player and he starts without problems. |

Re: Unable to install Driver for Radeon 9800 under WinXP
if you were messing around with the drivers it may be under a different place (or have a different name)
look in these two places (it may also be called Standard Display Adapter or something like that) ![]() to make "Other Devices" show up: in device manager goto View>Show hidden devices it will not be under "Audio- Video- and Gamecontroller" |

Re: Unable to install Driver for Radeon 9800 under WinXP
Hi all,
First timer here having problems same as maria. I try to install it manually but I get "The hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary software." I've downloaded the latest Cat drivers from ATI (8.65). Should I try an older version? Any help appreciated. Thank you. Oh, I have an ATI 850xt plat ed, windows xp sp3. |

Re: Unable to install Driver for Radeon 9800 under WinXP
Hello xiaobao12 and welcome to DH.
![]() ATI has moved all cards older than HD 2000 series to legacy support, so the latest regular driver sets, like the one you downloaded, no longer support X850 XT PE. ATI has issued a legacy driver last month so you may try it. If you are not successful with those, I suggest that you try version 9.3 which was the last regular version to support the card. No need to try manual install, just run the setup program and it should be fine (I have 9.3s working with a 9800Pro, so it ought to be fine for an X850 series card; also, I think that that "9.8" is just 9.3 with updated CCC, so it should be fine too ).

Re: Unable to install Driver for Radeon 9800 under WinXP
Hi Ivan - nice avatar and thanks for your reply!
I stumbled upon that page after posting here and I ended up doing what you suggested. I used 9.8 without a hitch. But, the xt800 series is showing up under "unknown devices" in device manager. And there are two entries: Radeon X800 SERIES and Radeon X800 SECONDARY SERIES. Why two? and why is it under unknown? Also, in device manager, I still have two unknown devices. When I click on Properties, I get this: This device is not configured correctly. (Code 1) To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver. Under the Details tab, it says: ROOT\LEGACY_NPF\0000 What's going on here? Thanks in advance. |

Re: Unable to install Driver for Radeon 9800 under WinXP
Glad to hear that you got that sorted.
Well... If all of your hardware is working, I can't remember of anything smarter than to try removing those two devices and see if they come back.

Re: Unable to install Driver for Radeon 9800 under WinXP
Hey Ivan,
Just tried to open up CCC but it doensn't open. ACtually, when I booted up windows xp after the installation, it had said that the installation failed or something like that. But I am able to use the graphics card no problem - at least in windows (I just right clicked and went to properties). How can I fix this? TIA. |

Re: Unable to install Driver for Radeon 9800 under WinXP
Do you have .NET framework 2.0? CCC needs it to run and if it's missing it behaves just like you described, the installation reports an error and then installs the driver and CCC, but CCC doesn't work. If you don't have it, you can download .NET Framework from Microsoft's site.

Re: Unable to install Driver for Radeon 9800 under WinXP
Hey Ivan,
Yes, I do have NET frame installed. I have 1.1, 2.0, 3.0, 3.5. (Btw, why do I have so many?) Should I uninstall them and install the latest one? Thanks.

Re: Unable to install Driver for Radeon 9800 under WinXP
You have so many because MS is making them in quick succession and new versions are incompatible with the code for older ones, it's okay to have them all at the same time.
![]() Well, I can't say what the problem is. I know that CCC likes to report to ATI servers and it refuses to start if there is an Internet connection yet the firewall is not letting it through as I had that issue, but I don't remember that it complained about a failed install because of it.

Re: Unable to install Driver for Radeon 9800 under WinXP
Why are there so many threads that are started for seeking a solution they post a couple ofbland comments then just dissappear?? Spambots maybe.

People solve their problems, either thanks to the comments or on their own, and don't post back. A little rude maybe, but not spam.
