driver install locks up at the ati splash page

hey all. recently upgraded from an asrock core 2 duo sataII mb to a asrock p45xe for pci-e 16x/2.0 support. swapped everything out last nite, installed the .inf files from the motherboard cd, uninstalled the ati drivers, ran driversweeper in safe mode to get everything, an tried to reinstall ati catalyst 8.12 (i know 9.1 is out but i know 8.12 worked fine on my old board). everything runs fine until it gets to the ati splash page to actually install the drivers. it locks the system up requiring a reset. my specs are as follows

asrock p45xe motherboard
win xp pro sp2 on a maxtor 10gb ide drive
games loaded to a seagate 250gb sata drive
palit hd 3870
2gb mushkin ddr2 667
generic dvd drive
pci modem (yeah, i live in the boonies, no bb available)

i've got the bios set to default currently but am planning to oc if i ever get it running. i can uninstall the card with device manager and let xp install the drivers automatically with limited funcitionality. it will not load ccc and i love the vivo color saturation option of ccc, so i gotta have it not to mention the various 3D settings. i can load drivers, an ccc independently, but not wdm which ccc aparently needs to load as i get a MOM. error at start up and a cli. error if i try to open ccc. don't know if it helps but this board uses the intel chipset where my old board used the via chipset. any ideas. thanks in advance.

Re: driver install locks up at the ati splash page

I'd try a couple of things not necessairily in the order I'll list them.

First, make sure that your 8.12s are a good set. It's possible that they got corrupted during the D/L. You might try D/Ling them again.

Second, if you still have it, try installing the drivers on the CD that you got with the card. Then try updating WITHOUT uninstalling anything. It hasn't been necessary to do an uninstall of the old ATI drivers for quite sometime now, and the newer CATs do an uninstall ar part of the install process.

Third., try the 9.1s. The 8.12s were not one of ATI's better set of Cats. I never did get them to install on my 3870 X2, and when I called ATI, the tech said, "There are 'issues' with the 8.12s, and we recommend going back to the 8.11s".

LAST RESORT: It sounds like you are trying to use an existing OS with the new MB. That's not always the best thing to do. You might be better off doing a clean install of your OS.

Re: driver install locks up at the ati splash page

the 8.12s are the same 1's i used previously with this same card. so you don't think driversweeper is necessary then, correct? the drivers that came on the cd are 8.09 if i recall an gave me the same result. i've even tried copying the data from the cd to both drives an runnin the exe from both an still nada. i was pretty much convinced it wasn't the drivers since i was gettin the same result with 3 different options.

is it possible that both my hdd are failing simultaneously? i suppose it's possible. i have a scan/repair utility with the seagate but not 1 for the maxtor.

i see a reinstall in my near future. anything else you can possibly think for me to check before i do a reinstall? thanks.

Re: driver install locks up at the ati splash page

talkin to myself here but postin this just in case anybody else runs into the same problem. after getting the same crap after a reinstall, i found a hdd scan utility. the drive failed every test, but unfortunately there was no repair option, so i found another hdd and reinstalled. problem solved.

Re: driver install locks up at the ati splash page

the other hdd i installed turned out to be a 10yr old wd that sounded like a jet engine. so i ordered a new wd sataII drive. it finally came in an i did a fresh install of xp sp2, mb .inf and .net 2.0. got the same damn lock up at the splash screen...this is starting to wear thin on my nerves.
