Default Post Guide to uninstalling ATI drivers in win9x

The following is the method I have used since December of 2k1 for uninstalling drivers on win9x system.

1. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall everything ATI.

2. Reboot

3. Upon reboot cancel out of the plug and play and point the OS to "Standard VGA" for the Video driver (if asked)

4. Go to start->find files search your windows directory (default c:\windows) for ati*.* Anthing that comes up delete (except of course any ATI in IE). When I say delete, I mean put in recycle bin. Don't erase completely until you have succesfully installed newer drivers.

5. Go to start->run-> type in regedit**

6. In regedit go to hkey_local_machine,software, find ati folders then highlight them and hit delete key.

7. In regedit go to key_local_machine,system,currentcontrolset,service s,class, display, and remove folder 0000 or 0001(which ever looks to contain the ati/radeon driver info.)

8. Reboot

9. You should now be completely clean (hence clean install) and ready to install latest ATI drivers on your system. Just go to the setup.exe file and install.

**the registry can be a dangerous thing to mess with. I highly recommend downloading and installing regcleaner here http://www.vtoy.fi/jv16/programs/RegCleaner.exe Then in place of 5-7 above simply run regcleaner. Tick the ATI entries (including 'installed options not grouped with other ATI entries) and click remove. Now proceed with step 8**

I 've got a few suggestions for the guide. If you are using ATI MMC and/or ATI DVD do not uninstall them in Step 1, just get rid of ATI Display Drivers. Instead when you have installed the new driver set, run the Setup.exe for the respective program (e.g. in my system C:\ATI\support\mmc-7-7-0-0-update\Setup.exe) and then from the options choose "Repair" and you are all set. In addition in Step 4, you only need to delete files in the C:\Windows\Inf directory and subdirectories otherwise you might delete ATI stuff that have nothing to do with the driver installation.

I protest

I was flammed for making a similar suggestion over at rage3d.

But why uninstall drivers in the first place? It is only required 1 time in 1000.

So,
keep good backups..ie copies of your valuable data mp3, resumé , tax forms , porn etc
Install drivers over old drivers.
When in Fs up, (1 time in 1000) Format C: and start over.

It save hours and hours of messing with regedit and restarting.

Superfluous movements and also danger of a mistake grows.
better to go at once your windows/system directory (default c:\windows\system)

- (In general these actions are unessential in struggle against problems, only the risk of a mistake for the end user grows)

(remove ATI*.* files with field in properties "Copyright (C) 1998-2002 ATI Technologies Inc" & oemdspif.dll,
and possible remove languages & help & other modules ATF*.* ATT*.* ATM*.* ATR*.*,
exclude other vendors files - ATRACE.DLL ATRACE.DLL ATMUI.DLL ATMUNI.SYS, ATL.DLL, possible codec ATRAC3.ACM and ATI screensavers AT*.scr)

- go to %windir%/inf/other, delete files "ATI Tech*.inf"
(from the analysis of statistics of the typical reasons of problems of users with installation, which use automatic options)

> Go to start->run-> type in regedit

..and all keys of a type HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet \Services\Class\DISPLAY\0xxx (xxx - digit), if our videocard - singe in our system.

also probably go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum\PCI
& remove keys of type HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum\PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_.......
(it's equivalent the line in my computer/devices/graphics adapter in safe mode, whence it also can be removed)

PS: in practice it is minimally enough to advise to remove key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ATI Technologies
The everything else is better to advise to use regular means for the user (wizard add remove/programms, properties my computer etc.)
