unforunately, There is a problem with the inspiron 5100 and win2k.
It just doesn't work. Problem is not the video card, its the BIOS (or the video card's BIOS).
I've read a lot of posts on the Dell forum consirning this problem.

the only thing you can try is this

before you install the driver
change to following registry settings to 0

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Session Manager\Memory Management\LargeSystemCache 1 (change it to 0)
DisablePagingExecutive 1 (also change it to 0)

reboot, install the win2k drivers, reboot and pray

Hope that helpes

thanks for the reply, do have any idea what could the actual problem be that would prevent a driver from working, i know its prbbly the bios, buut what about the bios is preventing it from running in win2k and not linux/winXp

if only i knew, I keep asking myself that same question. Dell engineers probably now the answer but won't tell us. Dell's statement on this is the following: The model you specified is not Win2k compatible. therefor no win2k support is given.
The laptop is sold with WinXP so they only support that OS for that type of computer.
I know they kind of make you "have" to use XP even if you don't want to but on the other hand, I can not expect from Dell that they have to support every OS for every type of computer. No big OEM company does that btw.

Hi Patje, sorry not able to respond to you earlier. Been tied down by work.
I wun mind sharing what I have intended to do.

My idea is that Dell could have input some special instructions to the files.
So by using the same driver bundled for winxp to be used on win2k.
I simply changed from WINXP in the inf files to WIN2k. Well usually driver for win2k works for winxp.
That is my desperate move there.

If it is true that the BIOS has something to do with it.
Can't we get the bios of another dell 7500 which has win2k support to flash on the 5100.
But one thing that I am not sure is that what happens when the video bios is corrupted? We cannot just plug a pci card like a desktop. Maybe someone would like to share her/his experiences.

Anyone still working on something?

Jueda,

You can try using the mobility modder to mod the Dell Xp driver.
I think it will work.

About getting a bios from another machine is imo to tricky and to dangerous. this could mess up your entire laptop so i don't think thats a good idea.

Greets

That could be a mixed up here, patje. I am not the user here. Someone requested for my help. He should have tried your mobility modder before resorting to other means. The laptop black out once it goes into win2k.

Dell Inspiron 5100 and ATI Radeon 4700 Mobility Driver [W2K]?

Why is it that I can install win 98 1st and second edition and a VGA controller is installed that works.. While win 2K is the one that will not install one no matter how hard you try? From my understanding this is what's causing our Dell insiron 5100 to error out during install of the mobility drivers. You have to have a VGA controller driver installed before it will install those drivers. I also notice that EVERY driver in the CD has a Win 2K version... Is there a way of installing a generic VGA controller that will allow the Mobility driver to fully install??

Personally, i don't think that will do the trick. As far as i know, Dell has to solve this by fixing the BIOS, i guess they have there reasons not to, (except i can't think of any)
I've read a lot of threads about this and no one was able to fix this in any way.

That would not take away the fact that you should be able to install a generic driver. Maybe if i find some time i'll try to do this.

greets

IMO, if you are able to get general VGA controller to install fully. You still wun get the full capabilites of the mobility.

Just thought I’d mention that a Dell 5150 user, that had the same problem with Win2k, has posted a solution in the Inspiron Video forum... ”click here”.

The 7th post in that thread has another user (Spazzie) confirming that the solution also works for his 5100/Radeon 7500 and Win2k, using the A22 BIOS.

Aloha,
Rod

Thanks so much for the feedback Rod !!!!!

Like I said, this problem could only be resolved if Dell showed up with a new bios that fixes the problem, I'm glad they finally did!
