Questions re: ati mobility radeon 9700

I loaded the modnetter for my ati mobility radeon 9700 on a dell inspiron 9200. I have used the driver for at least a year.
I recently got a new monitor to replace my 19"(used as secondary). The new monitor is a 25" lcd, hi-def capable one. The monitor had problems waking up and eventually would not power on.

Thinking it might be a problem with my video drivers, I rolled back to my ancient Dell drivers. I also returned the monitor for a new one. It seems to be working properly.
I don't think the video driver was the problem, but before I reinstall your drivers again, any help concerning whether or not I should/should not be able to use the drivers would be very much appreciated. Or is there some settings I should check.
Halo runs terrible with the Dell drivers!!!
