Help with AGP 8x

Hi I have a shappire Radeon 9500 modded to a 9700. Everything is great, but there is one thing. I cannot get APG 8x to be activated, my mobo is a Gigabyte GA-7VAX (KT400, bios revision F10) and it does support 8x AGP- in fact in bios it says that my video card is running at 8x. The moment I get into windows XP though and look at the SmartGard tab- it says my system is running at 4x AGP, if I move the slider to 8x and hit apply, windows tells me to reboot (which i do, and the setting reverts back to 4x).
How do I fix this, I know 8x and 4x doesn't differ that much- but still... it kinda bothers me. I have also tried using the smartgard uninstaller- after completeing uninstall, comp reboots- but smartgard is still there?!?!? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
-sheng

System Specs

Maybe Smartgart is auto-switching it back to 4x for compatability reasons Don't worry, you're not missing out on much.

I had the same problem with my setup and the way I fixed it was to use the SMARTGART uninstaller (Note: It DOES work but the tab remains visible under properties. If you try to change the settings, it will tell you that it is not functional). Then I went into BIOS and changed the settings to what I wanted (e.g. AGP 8x + Fastwrites = ON/OFF). Now, if you re-install the Control Panel AND the Catalyst Drivers, SMARTGART should now show your current settings.

Hope this helps!
