Anti aliasing on or off?

I noticed that unless I set anti aliasing to application preference I have trouble running splinter cell correctly. I was wondering if it is recomemded to have aa on application preference all the time or not. I have a radeon 9700 and have never had fps problems with aa on.

I think Splinter Cell has a known problem with AA, and it's recommended to turn it off for this game.

Normally people have to turn it off but if you're one of the lucky few..try running it at a high res. and turn AA back on.

Splinter Cell does not support

antialiasing at all. The way the game was programmed, it doesn't support it. I can't find the link where the developer stated this but if I find it, I'll post it. This means you'll just have to set it to ''Application Preference" for ATI cards. As for nVIDIA cards, you don't have to do anything. Even if you were to set AA to 2x, Quincunx, 4x, or whatever, the driver won't actually run AA but the AA setting will be ignored once you're in the game.

Thanks for your help I will just disable aa for splinter cell. Also I have a problem with the lastest cats in midnight club 2 when the game locks up 5 mins into playing it. Does anyone know a work around for this?

Splinter Cell does work with AA with Radeon 9700, you turn AA to ''Application Preference", then when your in the game you'll get the light sources appearing through walls, just turn nightvision off and on a couple of times to fix this problem, I know its a hassle but it works.

Can you post 2 pictures of Splinter Cell with one picture having no AA and one picture with AA on?? Make sure you use the same resolution and the same location when taking pics.

Maybe they can add a feature in the driver and if he recognizes Splinter Cell, the driver doesn't use the AA, a little bit like Nvidia

not exactly, since application preference makes it default off, but in game where u can change it into the game like NeverWinter Nights, or Max Payne or Hitman 2, or whatever game it works, and is the only way to change the AA into game.

It turns it off in most games, but trust me in works in Splinter Cell. I've been playing this game with AA on for ages, I'm not lying, why should I. BTW, I don't know how to upload images to the web, if someone knows how, could they please give me a discription on how to do it.

Sherv, if you send me the game images of Splinter Cell (with AA on and with AA off at the same location), I'll upload it here. The reason I'm skeptical is because the game developer themselves (Ubisoft) have stated that Splinter Cell doesn't support AA with current video cards.

Splinter Cell doesn't support AA, whether from the application or the driver. If you want to avoid issues with this game, use the D3D control panel to set AA to "Application preference" to disable AA.

Big Grin

Ubi Soft might not support AA in splinter cell, but it works on my machine. BTW Optimummind, I sent you the images before and after with AA on and off, if you have time could you post them, to show I'm not talking shit.

I got your pictures but I think you chose a wrong place to take pictures. I mean, the scene is too dark and you don't have many edges in your environments. I'll post your pictures later though. I'll also post an example picture of the kind of scene environment I'm talking about. But trust me, the Ubisoft development team themselves have stated that AA doesn't work. I just wish I still had the link to the statement.

yea, agreed but, in my opinion, the requirements to run this game is just too high......even with AA off....

yeah, I get my performance killed in some areas of the game. I wonder if it happened on the xbox? If it didn't they they made an absoloutly terrible port.

I play AA x 4 and AF x 8 24/7 on a 9500pro, and I get through games with great FPS, 100fps is my lowest ever on SOFII since I overclocked to 2.2ghz.

Erm....I'd really like to see these shots, because any vid card, nVidia or ATI, cannot run AA with the game (or they can but then you get the lighting problem, heh).

Tek, thats SOFII. I get 100FPS on it too. Different games have different requirements. SOFII doesn't have nearly as many calculations as spliter cell does.

Here are the two pics that Sherv sent me (sorry for taking a while before posting). He didin't tell me which pics were with AA on and AA off. You can, however, see in both pictures that aliasing is occurring. In one picture, the aliasing effect on the roof of the car is profound. In the other, however, that part of the car is not receiving any light to make a comparison not very useful. Well, here are the pics:
