I'll probably do that. Does he still play around with the LoD though? I'm only recently 'back to ATI' after the horrible 7500 and problems with the 8500, so I haven't ever tried drivers that he's played with on ATI. That said, I did try some for Nvidia where he 'increased' image quality by messing with the LoD, the major downside being an awful lot of pixel-popping.

If he now, with Cat drivers, only repackages them and 'bug-fixes', without any attempt to mess around with quality settings, then I'll be more than happy to give them a shot. I can't seem to find much information about this one way or another on his site.

The only thing you can do to get rid of this is to change them both to only "high" textures for characters and general.. On most maps you can leave the general textures to "extra" and only change the character textures to "high" and get rid of the stuttering.

I've listed this problem many times in many different threads and forums, and nobody has any answers. You aren't alone with this problem. I don't know if it's the drivers or the game, and I don;t think anyone else does either, and if they do they haven't said anything. I guess the answer is to just wait. I though by getting a 9700pro I'd be able to run highest texture settings in games like COD- I guess I was wrong.

OK, I've had my first 'serious' problem since installing the full version of the game.

Right as the driving scene started, I got the VPU Recover Report Message right in the middle of the screen. However, the game did NOT stop. I was able to click the Do Not Send option and kept right on playing for a little while longer. (Until I got killed for the first time since installing it.

I'm using the Omega "c" drivers and just about everything turned on....including Fast Writes, which has never given me trouble.

Oh yeah, you should definately turn off VPU recover to play this game...

I did that and now it hard locks. Reverting to some previous drivers to see what happens.

EDIT:I have reverted to official CAT 3.7s and the lockups has ended for now. I got completely through the carride level without another hiccup.

One thing I noticed, however, is that when I went into the 3.7 CP OpenGL options to turn on AA and Aniso, and set Truform to Application Preference, when I hit the OK I was prompted to restart the computer in order to get the new settings. CATs 3.8 and 3.9 have not prompted me to restart....only a 'refresh' of the screen takes place. Has this somehow changed in the way these options can be implimented without having to restart the computer?

I want to know why I have heard nothing from anyone about a fix for the stuttering when "extra" for textures are used.

The lockups are a problem, but not for everyone. The stuttering seems to affect almost everyone (except for people with Nvidia cards) Or is this the same problem?

THis is the worst place in the game where it stutters with "extra" textures- then goes away when you use "high" texture settings. In the "burnville" map--

I wish there was at least a recognition of this problem. Maybe there is and I just haven't heard of it yet.

go here and look around with extra texures-

What map is that, I know abouts where it is, jsut not sure wich map. The one I was thinking of is Daylight, not night.

Nevermind, I didnt find the map, but I did notice less....I guess you'd call it stutter or slight sputter or chops, but for me it never was that bad really, it's split second stuff. I guess if you actually ahd a slower card/machine, or lower end card/mcahine, it'd make a bigger difference, so yeah I see what yer saying, and it is there, jsut I enver really had a problem with it cause I think my mahcine/video card, is beefy enough to handle it maybe, dunno. I also notice that useing high, as compared to extra, there seems to be a little less visual quality.....looks like things get kinda blurred down, or less detailed, alot of things I noticed seem like look smudged or blurred to a degree, wich would account for the less visuals useing high as compared to extra.

It's the beginning of the game- I think it is saved under "burnville" - it's the same map that was in the first demo.. You need to set both general and character textures to "extra" in the graphic settings to see the stuttering.. I have a 9700pro w/ 128mb of onboard ram, I would expect stuttering with 64mb of ram, or less than 512mb of system ram- So if you have at least 128mb of video card ram, and at least 512 mb of system ram, and still see stuttering W/O hard drive activity, that's when I think it becomes a driver bug or a game problem. Just keep that in mind when you test.

Well if you look at my sig, I have plenty of both ......1 gig pc2700, 128 meg 9700pro aiw card, AND my hds are both sata in raid, so that should help as well, and I still get what yer saying, wich seems to not do it in high settings. I lean more towards the game itself as an issue, not drivers, beause the game is new for one, and it doesn't hapoen when high is set, only extra. With drivers, I tend to think it'd do it no matter what, just my thought.

Yeah, I'm thinking it's the game too- because a 9700p w/ 128mb ram + system with >512mb of ram should not stutter in a game, no matter what the graphic settings. especially if there is no harddrive activity, if there was the answer would be more system ram. I know because I used to only have 256mb of system ram, and almost all games stuttered all the time w/ WinXP.

But then again, if it happens only to ATI cards, and Nvidia cards Do Not have the problem, then I think it may be a driver/card issue.

Well, I've tried the 3.9's, the Omega 3.9's and I still have no option to turn on character shadows in-game. Are other people seeing them? Am I going mad?

Oh, and if you have them, could you post your config.cfg file here for me (or email it to dv@techemail.com)

Thanks

There is no option to turn on character shadows at all in the game that I see. The option doesn't exist. I've tried just about all the CAT and Omegadrive drivers since 3.4. The option isn't there.

Also, since copying the CAT 3.7 atiogl.dll into the CAT 3.9 installation, I have not have one single instance of a lockup. The ONLY problem I had was a brief period while my son was playing it, his character got stuck in one of the trenches. He couldn't move in any direction. Had to restart the level.

You can go here- (pic below- burnville) with extra textures enabled for general AND character w/ AA and AF enabled and get NO stuttering at all??? Looking from left to right? I almost find that hard to believe, then again- you aren't using Windows XP-- so maybe it's an XP thing........

I also have all those same settings-

Yep that's what I have to do too set testures to high-- see, that's the problem- I want to set textures the extra without stuttering, I think we should be able too.

I was getting SERIOUS freezes (hanging the entire machine so badly that I could only reboot using safe mode to clear it) until I disabled fast writes (BTW I did not have to bother disabling it in the BIOS either).

Since then no probs.

I'm running XP home, and Catalyst 3.9 with a Radeon 9800

You have a fixed sized Swap-file? I have a big (2gb) fixed swap, read it needs atleast 400mb for CoD alone, dunno if that helps..

I have a 768mb swapfile on a separate partition of my HD made especially for my swapfile. I dunno- maybe I could make it bigger- but I don't know how that would affect anything because my game runs completely in the system ram- my hard drive barely runs at all in the game.. I could try changing the size though.

I hope that this problem will be fixed soon. Why I should have to disable fastwrites? Aren't they useful for better agp<->cpu comunications? I prefer to use 3.7 driver and to have enabled fastwrites option until will be out a new release of Catalyst drivers. The only problem for me with CAT 3.7 in CoD is that the motion blur effect is not rendered properly.
Anyway ATi seems to be more interested in DirectX stability & optimizations rather than OpenGL's... I hope that this will change in the future (at least for the stability!). Actually I think OpenGL is the only field in which nVidia has the lead.

Fast Writes has screwd up so much for my radeon cards... disabling it has fixed loads of random lockups and reboots for me with different games... whats it supposed to do anyway?
