Spellbot 5000 is on a distinguished road

Disabling fastwrites and enabling Delayed Transaction in BIOS definately minimized the hiccups in gameplay for me. There are still a few, but they used to be really annoying whereas now I can barely notice. Changing the setting is worth trying for anyone out there.

I hope when Cat Maker comes up with a patch for COD that it is "front page" news. I am one of the few that is stuck using 3.7 drivers. Finicky system I guess...

According to the games readme, the EXTRA settings require 256 mb card memory... maybe thats why some people are experiencing some stuttering at occasions? Im running on EXTRA settings with my radeon9500Pro 128mb and it runs smooth at 30-80fps... I do get the occasional stuttering, gonna check next time if disabling the EXTRA settings fixes that...

I just was forced to turn off FastWrite in order to get COD to run stable. I turned VPU Recover off just to be sure. I was hoping someone could PM me about the CAT 3.7 atioglxx.dll file. I need it to see if that will help. I like fastwrite....

If you've done everything else, check this thread. I posted a way to give the game more memory:

extra texture settings read on ---

ok i thought id just say that the Extra Character & General Textures settings is only suposed to be turned on if u are running a video card with 256 megs of ram on it!!!! so theres no wonder peeps are having stuttering with it turned on when running a 9800/9700 128 meg card, it wont run it!! this is taken from the read me file that accompanies the game -

5. Recommended Texture Settings for Video Cards

If you are experiencing performance or graphical anomalies, use the texture guidelines below, or select "Optimal System Settings" in the Game Options menu. This may alleviate the problems you are seeing.

- Video cards with 32MB to 64MB of video RAM are able to use the Normal Character & General Textures settings.

- Video cards with 128MB of video RAM are able to use the High Character & General Textures settings.

- Video cards with 256MB of video RAM are able to use the Extra Character & General Textures settings.

* Video cards with 32MB of video RAM will see improved performance with the Low Character & General Textures settings.

so theres the answer to ur stuttering problems, i read the first few pages of this thread so if this has been pointed out in the last few pages then sorry but otherwise hope this helps!!!!

BAH__ I read the read-me and overlooked that- I saw somewhere in there it saying you "need a robust sytem" to run extra textures, just didn't see where it said you need 256mb ov video memory to run extra textures- that really sux-

I can see why it would run slower, but I still don't think it should stutter like that.

Extra looks so much better than just high. Oh well, I guess in a year or so I'll probably upgrade to a card that has 256mb of ram, but by then I will have sold my COD CD I'm sure-- Oh well.

Hmmm, I don't think this is the problem with the stuttering. The stuttering was really chronic in the first 2 maps. Check it. When you find a spot you are stuttering, just stand still and start moving side to side real slow. You will see the FPS drop from say 80 to 20 and then back up to 80 again, at the same spot you just had 20.

On the bright side, the later maps give no problems with stuttering and extra settings for both, which is what mine is set at. In fact I run 1600 x 1200 (16X aniso-quality), extra, extra, 32bit, and trillinear and never go below 40 FPS. My system is nothing special.

Just a thought: Has anyone tried Defragging their HD to see if there's any change in performance?

I actually tried that for a game that crashed on me for an unknown reason earlier... big file for the game in question had over 350 fragments. never had a crash or stutter after i assembled the "pussle"

Cool, you're absolutely right, I just noticed that for myself. In the later levels it's absolutely no problem to put at least general textures on "extra". With character textures on extra it still stutters _slightly_ sometimes but not as bad as it does in the first levels. Strange....

So BWX, I'd suggest to test it out again in the later levels.

Radeon 9700 Pro + new omega drivers 2.9.46c working here.

Other levels aren't near as bad- I can run extra general mostly, but extra characters usually gets some stuttering here and there. But at 80 to 120 fps, I can't imagine it's because my card "only" has 128mb of onbaord ram.

same stuttering problem here with ati9700 and cats 3.8 and all settings at extra.
I guess we need a game patch soon. Anyone know if a patch is on its way??

This is from the readme:

Video cards with 128MB of video RAM are able to use the High Character & General Textures settings

Video cards with 256MB of video RAM are able to use the Extra Character & General Textures settings

That's true- it does indeed say that. I just wish it didn't........ It will be while before I have a video card with 256mb of onboard ram. It will probably be the card that comes after the XT, (420?) and only after that card comes way down in price. (a year maybe)

Maybe they could run a patch that has a texture level in between high and extra- Just to reduce the stuttering a little.. I can run extra textures at 70 - 120+ FPS- I only get stuttering in certain areas- so it wouldn't take much to smooth it out.

Sad

Hi, this is my first post i think, this forum is very helpfull, i´m one of those with problems in COD, the game just freezes while playing some minutes, i have managed to play longer with my agp set to 4x and fastwrites off but still locks or hangs my computer sometimes......

Radeon 9800 pro Powercolor not overclocked
Asus a7n8x deluxe+amd 1700@2000+2x256Mb ddr400+80Gig Seagate

Using cathalyst 3.7 supossed to be problem free........?

Also used 3.8 and 3.9 but problems in battlefield made me change.....
I bought this card to play this games at high quality versus my Gforce 4 4200 (with no driver problems NEVER), so whats the point?, Ati fix this soon please or i will regret my buy forever and go back to my stable Nvidia´s

Thnx

I think I've found a couse and I've found my own soultion to lockups/crashes.. i have the issues more often turning up the eye candy.... I since i was layed off i've been playing cod like a mad man. it kept crashing .. i check the temps ... they mach my 3dmark results and them i check the temps in cod.... its warmer... quite wierd i'm working on a write up..it seems mabe the thermal issues aren't totally fixed ... for some reason in cod the temps a seval C hotter even on the memory side than in 3dmark! wich never changed in any of my previous tests . I'm running the temporary fixed drivers 2. going back to the regular 3.9's and test again....

I was able to solve my lockups ... i took and set an 80mm fan blowing across my card.
could some one else try this or to confirm?

please pm me the results....

Is it just the full game of COD that has problems?
I heard the demo is problem free.

Thanx cat maker! really hope you can fix it........(by the way i really didnt have problems with my Gforce, its true, but its not as powerfull as this Radeon 9800, visual quality is outstanding and fast really fast....when it doesnt lock up!)

My power supply is 450W Levicom so thats not the problem (its also on a dedicated power cable, not sharing with fans or others...)

Will try the fan blowing method although the card is not overclocked so it should run ok with the standard heatsink+ copper sinks in memmory i bought

My problem is with the 2 demos not the complete game

Thanx 4 the responses!

Anyways, sorry your ATI experience has started off bad. And yes I will fix this very soon and hopefully you dont regret bying ATI.
Cat. Maker. I can also testify as I had Nvidia through the 4600 Ti. I purchased the 9700 Pro as there was a sale and heard great things. Not one problem with any of the Nvidia cards.

Are you guys finding the problem to be with Quake 3 engine games. The reason I ask is last night I was blasting away with MOHAA Breakthrough for about a 1/2 hour when the game just shut down and kicked me back to desktop. No freezing, just sudden quiting. Fastwrites where switched back on.
