Okay this problem basically sprouted out of nowhere and I have no idea how to go about fixing it because i have done pretty much all the basics that I go through before asking for help, so before going any further i will post my specs which are as follow:
p4 3.06 asus p4c800-E deluxe (latest bios) corsair ddr333 ati radeon 9700 (latest drivers) windows xp sp1 (latest updates) This below is a SS i took of the screen when it becomes messed up. After restarting i never get an error message. The only time i have gotten an error message is when it did this while i was playing Need For Speed: Underground and i got a hard lock and then i was told that 9700 was causing system instablity due to failure to initiate direct draw. And to be clear, these problems only happen when i start up a game and play for a few minutes. Call of Duty has down this a few times, Return of the King once, and it happend with various other games i have been testing this problem with. Screen Shot If anyone has any ideas of what i should do, i would love to hear them. I figured first it was the 3.9s so i washed up everything then doubled checked with driver cleaner, then reinstalled with the new hotfix drivers for CoD and now i am still having these problems. It is a very annoying problem as you would imagine. If i missed any info, please let me know its quarter to 5 am and iv been messing with this crap for a while now. Any help is welcome and appreciated. Thank you |

I have the exact same problem except i have it with UT2003.... this really sucks..
![]() don't know when or how it exactly happened, i thougt after the 3.9's but after reverting back to 3.7 i still have the problem. Omega or original ATI doesn't seem to matter, both give lockups. Temps are not an issue, after i put on H2O cooling my temps dropped about 10 degrees, now @37 celcius for my vga core, cpu is 35 without load, 41 max load. I really hope someone has a solution, i play clanwars and i really need a functional UT2003... Plz help guys. specs: CPU.: Athlon 2500+ default speeds and fsb RAM.: 2x 256MB Geil DDR3500 6-3-3-2.0 MB...: Epox 8RDA+ rev1.1 nforce2 v3.14c OD...: NEC 1300A DVDRW+/- HD...: WD800JB 80GB 7200 8MB VGA.: Hercules Prophet 9700Pro 128MB cat 3.9 Omega Mon.: LG Flatron 995FT+ 19" CRT OS...: MS WinXP Pro SP1A VLK Case: Lian Li PC65 Alu Silver H2O.: CPU, NB and VGA > H2O

Bump
Still having some troubles, now when it happens in NFS, VPU recovery kicks in, but and my display is restored but, i still have to go and restart my computer because my videocard goes into software rendering mode. If anyone has any ideas, i would be glad to hear em. I have cleared registry and everything a few times, cleaned out my cabs, etc etc. So im open to some input for people who have expierenced this problem or those who have pertinent suggestions about what to do to solve this annoyance. Thank you for any help in advance. |

Arete........If you have the original driver cd that came with your 9700, why dont you try them.
If you have tried them, then how are the temps . I only ask about temps because prior to my 9800, I had a XFX GF4ti 4600, and man did this card put out some heat ! Even at stock speed. And this heat was rising up around my cpu socket, giving me high temps and lockups. Hope any of this helps. Maybe try adding more juice to the vid card as well ? Good luck, man.

mmm, i think my problems have been solved.
yahoo !!! its been 4 long weeks :PHercules sent me their own driverversion of the ATI catalyst 3.8's and since i installed those i can play UT2003 again without my radeon crashing on me. The hercules dudes told me some of their timings , especially ram-timings, were different from the ATI's . Presumably thats where the problem lies according to them. I've been testing 2 days now and i can even run UT2003 now with my CPU clocked at 10,5 x 200 Mhz (XP3000+ speed), something unthinkable before then. It stil could be more stable but since i went clocking my only errors come from Windows itself and not anymore from ATI drivers. @ Arete, dunno what brand your radeon is (ati ?) but if it's built by a 3party (hercules, fic. e.d.) it's a good option to try their drivers instead of ATI's or Omega's, sure they may be older but running stable is more important than running the latest and keep on crashing. I hope this works for you too since our problems were so alike. @ all the others: big thx for all your suggestions and help specs: CPU.: Athlon 2500+ now @ 10,5x200=3000+ RAM.: 2x 256MB Geil DDR3500 11-3-3-2.0 MB...: Epox 8RDA+ rev1.1 nforce2 v3.14c OD...: NEC 1300A DVDRW+/- HD...: WD800JB 80GB 7200 8MB VGA.: Hercules Prophet 9700Pro 128MB cat 3.8 Herculesdrivers Mon.: LG Flatron 995FT+ 19" CRT OS...: MS WinXP Pro SP1A VLK Case: Lian Li PC65 Alu Silver H2O.: CPU, NB and VGA > H2O
