Freezes in games

Hi there.

I have got a Sapphire Radeon 9600 Pro and a big problem. On quite a few newer games like UFO: Aftermath or STARWARS: Knights of the Old Republic my system freezes on the mainmenu. It seems that D3D games run properly. I nearly tried everything. I even downgraded my bios but it didn't solve the problem. I tried all drivers since the Cats 3.6. Even with the Omegas it didn't work. The OpenGL hotfix didn't work either. It doesn't change anything whether AGP 8x and FastWrite are turned on or off in the BIOS or SmartGart. I have tried the newest drivers for my mainboard (ASUS P4S8X-X). The funny thing is: when i turn the hardware acceleration down by one notch in the display properties the games work well, but i have a flickering mousepointer. That turnes most of the games unplayable. If anyone has an idea how i could solve the problem i would be really thankful.

These drivers i didn't try first. But i did it now and it doesn't change anything. Same problem as with any other driver.

[Update] I played along with some configuration options and programs and now it doesn't freeze instantly. In the program files/ati technologies-folder there is this shortcut to smartgart. Doubleclicking on it opens some further options as in the smartgart tab in the display properties. I disabled the both options for the agp-port and now it seems to work. I'll give it a long time try and post an update when everything is fine.
