Screen stuttering after 20mins. of gameplay Adventure gameplay

While playing Timescape: Journey to Pompeii & The longest Journey, the screen would start to stutter after 20 mins or so of playing.
The problem goes away once we alt-tab out of it an alt-tab back to it. Or restart the game. So this does not seem to be a over-heat problem.

Mine is a retail 64MB card 275/275 with no overclocking whatsoever. Latest Catalyst drivers from June'02. Also tried the Omega drivers based on the catalyst.

I played these games fine with Nvidia TNT2 riva.

Any clues anyone??
