I've never had any Smartgart or other installation problems with ATI drivers as I always restore my hard drive from a clean image (using TrueImage) that doesn't contain any videocard drivers.

I can't, however, say the same thing for Omega drivers. 3 dif Omega drivers have wreak havoc on my system in the past.

With my ATI AIW 7500 Radeon I have the Smartgart tab but my AGP is set to OFF when I take it to 4x it asks me to restart and I do then when I check it, its still showing off and not 4x also I dont see the overdrive option. Thanks for any help by the way I just did a fresh install of WinXP Pro then installed the drivers!

Did same thing but didint reboot in safe mode and i dont see smartgart any way i can enable 8x agp from bios

Hi, I have just one pretty n00bish question.

What exactly are the services ATI Smart and ATI Hotkey Poller? I have them disabled anyhow without problems but was wondering what they were.

My guess is that ATI Smart is SMARTGART which only runs once after the driver installation anyway and Hotkey Poller are obviously some hotkeys. I have no idea what kind of hotkeys though.

Best improvement I have seen yet. Need for Speed Underground is silky smooth now. Madden 2004 looks very nice. Had little hiccups with the 3.10's.

Hotkeys can be assigned thru the taskbar application in the ATI drivers. You can assign certain keys on your keybaord to control actions in games and apps. Like Hydravision or the ATI DVD player as well.

4.1 drivers seem to work well on my 9800Pro. SmartGart appears ok too. I don't see the overdrive tab, though. Is it not supported on the 9800Pro?

I see no probs here with SmartGART or any other features ..
In fact I have seen a performance gain which rivals the last Beta set I love .. called X.xxx here LOL

Are these optimized/good for a Radeon 9700 Pro? Or am I better off keeping older drivers?

I managed to work the kinks out that I was having with my overclocking

Now that those are worked out I dont have much issue really recommending these drivers

Wow- these did come out of nowhere-

I think I like being surprised better than knowing they are coming out "next week sometime"
- that week seems to last a month when I know....

So is using driver cleaner 2.7 after the uninstall of the 3.10's cool, or will it mess things up when installing this set? Any word on that yet?

Well to be totally honest I ve never really had issues till this set...... It seems that vpu recover is poping up ever 3 mins ( Ati I hope you enjoy all my vpu recover emails lol .Should have 15 from me now) My card isnt o/ced I havent figured out what the issue is. I am reverting back to 3.10`s . Terry I respect your work and know that you guys cant test on every config Its just for me these drivers arnt doing that well. Guys please dont recommend I do a clean install I have done everything short of reformating. Great job on another fine release Cat Team I know you guys work hard as hell to provide the industry best drivers. Maybe I`ll have better luck on the next set.

If I can help reproduce what ever is going on let me know Ill be more than happy to.

Issues:

1) VPU recover going nuts whenever doing anything from playing a movie in wmp ,powerdvd, or just surfing the web

2) 3d preformance droped accross the board. opengl and D3D

I uninstalled Omega 3.10, ran DRIVER CLEANER in safe mode, installed these new drivers, and rebooted to a VPU recover error that continued over and over until I pushed RESET button (locked my computer up) and uninstalled these drivers and reverted back to Omega 3.10...Thumbs Down ATI!

im using it too, which is why i suspected it, being beta i doubt ATI tests for it.

This has existed since the Cat 3.6's. I have reported this issue to ATI Feedback everytime since this problem started. Recent feedback reports included my workaround that I discovered, which should tell the ATI team exactly where to look for the problem. It's not just a problem with MY system (which has been reformatted since this problem first arose, BTW) because it does it on DIFFERENT chipset motherboards and with DIFFERENT CD sets of the game with the 8500 variations we have here. None of the systems are overclocked in any way, shape or form. Cat 3.5 and older, no problems, 3.6 and newer, this problem.



Before anyone says that they are not having this problem with the game, are you using an 8500? The problem may be 8500 specific, I don't know. This is on the FULL retail version, NOT the demo. The workaround that I have been using since the 3.6's STILL works on the 4.1's and STILL causes NO problems in any other games. I find that interesting.....

Workaround: replace the ati3d2ag.dl_ with the one from the Cat 3.5's.

atleast I not the only one Have the same issue It was like every 5 mins vpu recover poped up gone back to 3.10`s all wonderful now I guess the old saying is true. If it isnt broke dont fix it.....

I just installed over the 3.10 with no problems at all. Might be some flaw at the uninstall of the previous drivers what's causing the problem.

Well, just for an update, I uninstalled the 3.10's and then installed the 4.1's and all went very smoothly.


Here is what I did that worked perfectly (so far) in this order:

-disable FIREWALL

-disable internet connection

-install driver cleaner 2.7

-uninstall radlinker

-uninstall ATI probe device in hardware manager (what radlinker leaves behind)

-uninstall ATI 3.10 via control panel/ ATI uninstall utility

-reboot

-cancel out of windows new hardware wizard

-reboot into SAFE MODE

-cancel out of windows new hardware wizard

-run DriverHeaven Driver cleaner v2.7

-reboot

-cancel out of windows new hardware wizard

-install ATI Cat. 4.1

-reboot

-let Smartgart detect system (which works MUCH faster in cat. 4.1 than any other version of Catalyst)

-configure ATI settings (turn off VPU recover, set screen res./ refresh, set DCC off, set refresh rate override to 85hz, etc...)

-reboot

-run bench marks

-everything works great.



I lost about 200pts in 3dmark01, but it ran MUCH smoother- so if games behave the same, I'll take the very small performance hit in D3D.

Aquamark runs fine.

Still testing, and going to test some games. Seems like the new cats work fine so far, very smooth install and everything seems to work great, even when I uninstalled the previous driver set and used DH Driver cleaner 2.7. Will report back any problems if they happen.

so far ... so good ... looks great overall ... hope Omega is able to release his drivers till next weekend for some tests ... sorry ATI, but Omegadrivers ever were better for my mobility system

I got a question for Catalyst Maker. Seeing as how he spends more time here because its more civl and more mature then a certain other website *cough*. Are you aware of an issue with the ASUS 9800xt WINXP PRO login screen monitor blackout? A simple yay or nay would be suffice.

From what i remember, back when the Cat's 3.8 were launched, Catalyst Maker said something like "the ver 4.x would be the most revolutionary driver set released by ATi yet" ...

But from what i can see, the Cat 4.1 is just another "bug-fixing" release, with nothing spectacular added (course, maybe not for the casual gamer, the game programmers might enjoy the new OpenGL support)
