??? Adding custom 16:10 resolutions to the driver, i. e. 1680x1050 and 1280x800

Hi @all,

does there exist a way to add custom 16:10 resolutions like 1680x1050 and 1280x800 to the driver for my ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 (Dell Notebook)?

If I install the original "Catalyst Driver" (ati.com) with "Mobility Mod" (driverheaven.net) or the "Omega Driver" (omegacorner.com) there are only 4:3 resolutions I can choose, except the 1920x1200 resolution and this is too much for a lot of games. The packaged driver from Dell gives this resolutions. Which files or registry sections have to be modified or what tool can provide me such custom resolutions?

Sorry for my english.

chris

Ive been playing with it, without success unfortunately. I dont find the 1680x1050 res that interesting, but the 1280x800 is perfect for running games in widescreen mode (and keep a playable framerate).

Does anyone have any idea how to accomplish this? Ill happily test it out :-).

Cheers,

Powerstrip (www.entechtaiwan.net) helped me to setup 1280x800 with i.e. Omega-Drivers (www.omegacorner.com).

I took a screenshot with all needed values from the original driver and then added a custom resolution with that values.

With the original drivers, set resolution to i.e. 1280x800, write down the values in...

Powerstrip > Display profiles > Configure > Advanced timing options > Custom resolutions

..., install the i.e. Omega-Drivers an add a custom resolution with these values.

After you have added the custom resolution, you don't need Powerstrip anymore.

But please(!) be carefull(!)

I don't know "refreshforce", but I think it can't add custom resolutions.
But I may be wrong!

I am german, so I don't know how it's called in english, but in "Ati Control Panel" there is an option to set "screen scale".

german:
Anzeige -> Flachbildschirm -> Bild skalieren -> Erweitern bei Erhalt des Ansichtsverhältnis.

english: (maybe wrong terms)
Display -> flat screen -> screen scale -> Expand by holding screen relations

Could someone (who has an english setup) post the right english terms for this, if I made wrong translations?

you were close! ;-)

Displays -> Panel -> Scale Image -> Expand to full size / Expand while mainting aspect ratio

However, this has nothing to do with our original problem. Expand to full size will scale a 4:3 resolution to 16:9, making everything look incredibly fat. Our original question was to add a *native* 16:9 resolution to the drivers, which - when supported by a particular game - gives a much nicer result. The 1920x1200 resolution is nice, but doesn't perform well. The 1280x800 resulotion is much nicer that way. Your trick with PowerStrip worked just fine :-).

Its supported by recent games such as UT2004 and FarCry...

Sometimes "...when supported by a particular game..." can be a problem.

Therefor...

...can help.

Would it be that hard to edit/add stuff to an .ini file before installing to make the widescreen resolutions avaialble?

Also besides 1280x800 and 1680x1050, are there any other 'standard' widescreen resoluitons?

I had the same idea as you, but I don't know where and how. Omega would probably know more. Hey, Omega, are you hearing us?

I've contacted Omega with a privat message to please have a look at this thread. Let's hope he has enough time to get rid of this problem.

Yes, 800x500 and 1024x640.

Unfortunately my manifacturer did not implement these resolutions in his original drivers, so I don't know the values to set these custom resolution in Powerstrip to test it out. But I've played around for a while and I think it must be possible.

Any suggestions?

OK, I can add the resolutions you need for next set, but I would need a complete list of currently available (supported) 16:10 resolutions.

These are the resolutions currently supported by Dell's drivers on my WUXGA screen with a Radeon 9600 Mobility. The bold ones are widescreen modes.

1920x1200
1680x1050
1600x1200
1280x1024
1280x 800
1280x 768
1024x 768
800x 600

Cheers!

Well... indy911 has been faster

800x500 and
1024x640 should work, but is not tested.

1280x800 works great.

1680x1050 is not working correctly on my notebook (the same as from indy911), but this can probably be a bug in the original driver.

I can't decide for others, but if you publish a test-release I would test it.

chris

Update: Whats about a tool that easily can mod the driver for custom resolutions?

Are they already meant to be included in the 2.356b release of the omega drivers?

because they're not appearing. I can only see 4:3 resolutions and my native 1920x1200 widescreen res.

cheers

A really nice resolution to have is 960x600. I used that with the old nVidia card in this Inspiron 8500 and it's nice because it's exactly half of the 1920x1200 LCD native resolution.

I can't seem to get PowerStrip to add it to this 9600 card.

Hmm... well... not an bad idea!

I don't know if it's possible to transfer the values in Powerstrip from nVidia's to ATI's. Also I think it's better to mod an driver to support this resolutions.

Omegadrive? Can you tell us how to add resolutions to ATIs Drivers?

go into your omega setup folder (normally C:\Program Files\Radeon Omega Drivers v2.4.96c (or whatever driver version you have) and go2 into the 2KXP_INF subfolder and open either C2_RAD_OMEGA.inf or CX_RAD_OMEGA.inf (doesnt matter) and search for new video mode or new resolution or soemthign similar. Under here you should find a few examples of how the new resolutions are added. You can either add the new ones to the regular catalyst drivers or better yet modify the omeag inf files to support your new resolutions before you install the new drivers. sry i dont have time 2 explain in more detail. hope this helps

You don't need 2 explain in more detail, because that's exactly what I have been looking for.
Thanks! So we can test it out. Great!

Hmm... Patje made a great "Mobility Modding Tool"... What's about a "Resolution (Modding) Tool"?
It would be great to get an option to add and remove resolutions in drivers and in a running system.

I have asked him. Lets look what's the answer.

thanks Chris,

I've been asked before how to add custom resolutions. It really interests me and i'm searching for a way to do so now. maybe it will be in the next mod tool, maybe in a total different tool i'm still working on that.

the list of resolutions posted before, are those all of them? or are there more?
the bigger the list gets, the less i'll have to update after

thanks for the cooperation

It's hard to say, because there are a lot of different environments and a lot of different requirements.

Why don't you implement "config files" or "profile files"?

So the user can choose between the given "standard resolution sets" (i.e. 4:3 and 16:10) or can create "profiles" or "configs" by himself. Especially the last option is something I would prefer, because the most time I only need these 4 resoultions:

720x576 (PAL TV)
1024x768 (external TFT)
1280x800 (for games)
1920x1200 (for working)

Others would prefer other "resolution sets".

It's only an idea!

I think this is a near compleat list, I came up with this using a little bit of math and google so they're untested
The ones in bold are 1/2 the native resolutions and the italics are the native resolutions.

1920x1200
1680x1050
1440x900
1280x800
1024x640
960x600
840x525
800x500
640x400
