9600 Pro Crash Problems

I am going INSANE.

This has been happening for a little while now, I have tried cats 3.7-4.2 and Omegas (same versions).

Games run no problem. Fast, clean, no issues WHATSOEVER. But if I am just surfing the web. It will randomly give me an error saying that there was a hardware failure. Screen goes all 640x480 4 color and everything. I want to smash the card, and I think I am going to if this keeps up. Anyone have a clue?

I tried a clean install of windows and its still doing it. It makes no sense that OGL and DX games work 100% no crashes or anything, but when I just surf the net it bails out. The system can be idle for days, play games, do anything but surf. I thought it was memory for some reason, and put heatsinks on but it still does it. I think I am going to remove the shim and see if that helps. Otherwise I am completely out of ideas.

Specs:

Athlon XP 1700 @ 2GHz (does it at stock speed too)
Abit AT7-MAX
512 OCZ 3000 DDR
ATI Radeon 9600 Pro
Windows XP w/SP1
80GB Maxtor Diamondmax 9

In the Event Viewer here is the error:

The driver ati2dvag for the display device \Device\Video0 got stuck in an infinite loop. This usually indicates a problem with the device itself or with the device driver programming the hardware incorrectly. Please check with your hardware device vendor for any driver updates.

fast write

i was having the same problem with my 9600xt... i seem to have licked it with omega 4.2 drivers and turning on fast write.

seems that this is only needed with the 9600's.

hope this helps.

Thanks for the help. I have updated the chipset drivers, and also turned fastwrites on. Tried the cats and the omegas, and still same thing. This is driving me freaking nuts, and from the sound of it, its a software problem. Any other ideas?

This is not meant to cross post, but it sounds more like a driver/software problem then hardware.

What other apps are running in the background during your Web browsing or other activities when this happens? Are you running certain popup blockers, or other detection software apps?

This is getting BAD.

Its gotten to the point where it crashes doing random stuff like changing network settings. But I can game for hours on end.

This is my wifes computer and she is going to murder me if I don't get it running.

I did the hardware slider, I need to play around to see if it still does it. Its not something that is perfectly replicatable so it takes some work.

Where do I find out what my latest bios is and where do I get newer ones?

I would post an image of the processes, but I don't have a host. I pretty much keep up on them. Nothing out of the ordinary. I usually don't let the ATI ones start up - at least with my machine (9800 pro) but since I am troubleshooting this one, I am trying everything.

If the computer is using XP try this:

Go click on Start, then on Control Panel.

Now double click on the Administrative Tools.

Now double click on Event Viewer.

In the left column open up the Application list.

Now, browse through the Events list for all the Exclamation marks and look for any Red X's. Try to find a correlation between these warnings and the times that the computer crashes. You can double click on any of those warning titles/messages to get details about what happened.

Good luck!

There is no correlation between the error I get and any other problems. No other errors or warnings anywhere near the timeframe of the ATI errors.

Here it is:

The driver ati2dvag for the display device \Device\Video0 got stuck in an infinite loop. This usually indicates a problem with the device itself or with the device driver programming the hardware incorrectly. Please check with your hardware device vendor for any driver updates.

If you're referring to the Video Card BIOS, go to the Display Properties Advanced settings and click on the Options tab. Then click on the Details button.

Also....what type of Display/s (Monitor/s) do you have connected?

Thanks for all the help.

Seems to be ok now that I lowered the hardware acceleration slider down 1 notch.

Omega is the master of all.

Now is that going to hinder gaming performance or anything?

I have exactly the same problem but it happens on boot up. It will bluescreen with that very message. Everything was working fine until I decided to format and reinstall everything.

Any ideas?

Bringing this back from the dead. It actually turned out to be a stupid setting in the BIOS called (I think) AGP Driving Mode. It was set to a hex value and I set it to AUTO and no more problems!

Thanks to all for the help and I hope this helps someone else out.

Yup, and the real actual AGP value should be '66'. Either that or setting it to 'Auto' is fine. Not sure what value you had in there before. Glad things worked out for you now.
