ATI radeo 9800 XT + MS Flight simulator

Hi Guys!

I write this post to notice a strange experience lived by me.

I'm a MS Flight Simulator fan and i've buy an Hercules ATI 9800 XT in order to have the best performance as possible.

After MSFS' installation, i've find many issues

Simply, manifest as flickering scenery and a barber-pole or moiré pattern on buildings and a tiny checkerboard pattern that shimmers and flickers on distant scenery.

I've tried, with NO SUCCESS, to set-up my video card as suggest in this page: http://www.flightsim.com/cgi/kds?$=main/howto/ati2004.htm

The only work around founded was to set-up the MIP MAPPING QUALITY slider, inside MSFS' parameters, to level "3".

For levels 4>8 issues come back!!!

I've tried to work with MSFS's textures, also with NO SUCCESS.

All textures are .bmp at 1024x1024 or 512x512, DTX1, and 8 MIP levels.

Can you give me ani idea to solve this problem? IS it an issue related to drivers?
Have I wrong something?

Actually i'm using omega based on 4.5 catalyst.

Thanks...and sorry for bad english.

Byeeee

Emanuele

System Specs

I don't have any 'checkerboarding', but I do see just a bit of the 'barber pole' effect on buildings when I'm at a distance from them. As I get closer, it goes away. I think that it's just something that we have to 'live with' in FS9.

I have my 3D settings for the 9500 Pro set to 6x AA 16x FSAA, and have the following in-game video setings, and it works for me. I'm also using the 4.5 Cats. The rest of my system specs are in my sig.

Display Settings in FS9:

Scenery Tab:
Global scenery quality = Custom
Terrain mesh complexity = 100
Terrain testure size = High
Terrain detail = Land & Water
Water effects = Low
Dawn/Dusk texture blending = Checked
Extended terrain textures = Checked
Special effects detail = High
Scenery complexity = Extremely dense
Autogen density = Dense
Add-on dynamic scenery = Unchecked
Ground scenery casts shadows = Checked
Sun Glare = Checked
Lens Flare = Checked

Aircraft Tab:
Global aircraft quality = High
Virtual cockpit gauge quality = High
Reflections = Checked
Aircraft cast shadows = Checked
Landing lights = Checked

Weather Tab:
Global weather quality = high
Sight distance = 60mi / 96lm
Cloud draw distance = 40mi / 64km
3-D cloud percentage = 100
Detailed clouds = on
Cloud coverage density = Medium

Hardware Tab:
Target frame rate = 30
Display resolution = 1024x768x32
Render to texture = Checked
Transform and lighting = Checked
Anti-aliasing = Checked
Filtering = Trilinear
MIP mapping quality = 4
Hardware-rendered lights = 6
Global max testure size = Medium

Give those a try. If you don;t like the way they are, try 'tweaking' one setting at a time untill you get it the way you want. The IMPORTANT setting is the 'TARGET FRAME RATE. If you have it set too high, FS9 will automatically start decreasing settings to stay as close to the 'target rate' as it can, and you will get poored IQ.

Sorry OldBuzzard for delay.

Thank you... i've tried ur settirngs and FS9 goes, finally, very well!

For barberpole... i think that's a Fs9 problem :O)

Thanks again, bye!
