Pissed Problems with Catalyst versions 4.4 and higher

Not 100% sure if this is a driver issue or a PSU issue, but I thought I would post here anyways...

When I install any Catalyst versions above 4.3, I get into some serious issues. The video will turn off, the back on with a VPU Recovery error. Also, the video will turn off, and not back on, like its in hibernation mode, and the only way to fix this is to restart the computer.

I have used DriverCleaner to totally erase the old drivers before installing the new ones with no effect. I have tried Cat versions 4.4, 4.5, 4.6, 4.7 and Omega 4.7, all with the same result.

I have also tried re-installing the OS and that didn't make a difference.

Is it possible its a PSU issue though? I am running a P4 2.4 with 1GB RAM, R9600XT, 2x120GB HDD, SoundBlaster Live 5.1 and 2000 Pro SP4 on a Generic 350W PSU.

Any help or ideas would be great.

I've seen VPU recovery problems reported here disappear when a good quality PSU is used - depending on what your supply is putting out, you could well be at your limit, especially if you have have two optical drives (you didn't mention any...).

Also, try turning on fast writes in the bios and the video driver and see if anything changes - there may be an issue with your 9600XT there...

You may also want to search for posts dealing with your OS (2000 SP4) to see if there are any issues that recur - I have no experience with 2000, but others here might...

Welcome to DH!

Big Grin Yes, Welcome!

By the looks of things, you might be having a PSU issue. Generic stuff always cause problems for me. If you the money you can get a quality PSU from Antec But before you do you can try to remove some components to see if it really is a power issue. If it is possible, try removing some components by unplugging them and see if your problem goes away.

Sad

I bought a ATI Radeon 9600XT a few months ago, and had the same problem: VPU recovers and black screens during any game. Until I installed the Omega drivers (based on catalyst 4.3) and my problems were gone.

BUT.........

Last week i decided to install the newest catalyst 4.7 drivers from ATI, the bigest mistake... VPU recovery all over the screen
So I downloaded the newest omega driver, uninstalled all ati stuff and installed omegadriver. That didn't work out neither, still problems. So I uninstalled that Omega driver, and installed the omegadrivers I used until last week (based on Catalyst 4.3). But my system keeps locking up! I don't know what to do! I had a perfect running system, so there must be a way to solve it. Someone knows a solution?

Cheers all.

My config:
BIOS: Award Modular BIOS v6.0
Motherboard: Asus A7V600-X
Processor: AMD Athlon(TM) XP 3000+, ~2.2GHz

DirectX 9.0c
Graphics Card: RADEON 9600 Series (Omega 2.5.58)
Soundcard: SB Live! Audio

i have had this problem as well as signal loss. im currently using the UniAN drivers based on 4.7 without a problem now.

you can search this thread for very helpfull tips, its long but well worth the read for the tips. it could be just one little option that you wouldnt think would fix something.
http://www.rage3d.com/board/showthread.php?t=33752579

I had recently tried the new 4.8 and 4.9 beta drivers and i would have CONSTAINT rebooting and signal loss. previous to all this it was drivers 4.0 and above, until i fixed the issues somehow.... however even tho i fixed it using the drivers im currently using for some reason the beta drivers 4.8 etc are still not working, and are extreamly unstable for myself.

MAKE SURE U FILL OUT A FEEDBACK FORM!!!!!
