Sad Catalyst and Nforce drivers together not working

I had some stability problems when using Omega drivers, and uninstalled them and switched to newest Ati Catalyst 4.8. Also i updated my Nforce2 drivers to the current version, and then the system freezed at reboot with distorted screen when it tried to change the video mode.

I could log on with F8 and selecting VGA, and tried Radeon drivers 4.7 and 4.4 but they didn't work either.

I have installed both drivers without AV-software or firewall running.
All Ati or Omega stuff were removed from Control Panel's Add/Remove Progs before new installation attempts.

I also tried again removing the Nforce drivers and installing them again, and then the newest Radeon drivers.

Any ideas?

try running driver cleaner and wiping all nvidia and ati software off your machine....then install the nforce...reboot...then the catalyst

NForce Unified driver 4.27, it should be the newest. For W2000 that is.

Driver Cleaner, dl'd that and going to try. Wish me luck. Thanks for the tip.

Couldn't find posts by a user with that nick, or very close that I also tried. Do you remember the nick right? Or maybe he has left the forum.

I tried Cab Cleaner and Driver Cleaner, but they didn't help. (For those that dont know, they are for removing display drivers completely from the system) The result was just the same. So I think the problem is probably with the nForce drivers.

I bought my Epox MB at the winter, February I think, and haven't updated the BIOS. I haven't touched too many BIOS settings, so maybe I have to look at them too.

I installed nForce drivers that came with the Epox CD, and have used them since. Untill now when I updated both nForce drivers and ATI Catalyst drivers instead of Omega drivers.

And I just got Radeon about month ago, and installed Omega drivers then.

So maybe I have to go back to the original nForce drivers or some other older than the newest version.

Or maybe I have to update the BIOS, but I'm afraid it might cause more problems, and then isolating them could be even harder.

What do you think? Are the Omega drivers more unstable than ATI Catalyst ones?

All the ideas to solve the problems very wellcome.

I had similar problems with my nForce2 mobo with my Radeon 9500. I had to revert my desktop refresh rate to 60Hz. It seems the new Catalysts fix the WindowsXP refresh rate bug, so the desktop is really whatever you set it to.

However, I'm not so sure if this is the fix. I don't have any stability problems anymore, though.

Okay, I tried to go back to the original combo of nForce drivers 2.03 and those Omega drivers, but again with the same result.

So I have theory of what happened.

What caused this problem, was when I uninstalled Omega drivers, and installed the new Ati Catalyst drivers, and those worked then.

Then I DID NOT uninstall the old nForce 2.03 drivers, but installed the newest nForce drivers on them. That was probably not a very good idea! After that the system didn't boot (it did, but only in safe mode or VGA mode through the F8) but freezed or crashed and rebooted.

A few uninstalling cycles later (both the nForce and Radeon drivers, using the Cab Cleaner and Driver Cleaner with the latter) it seems to me that:

Uninstalling the nForce drivers doesn't work properly. Something is left behind, either files or stuff in registry or maybe in cab files. And because of that, new install of drivers doesn't go through like it should. And that makes the Radeon drivers fail. Driver Cleaner for those nForce drivers would be very usefull.

So, if you have advice how to clean files and registry and so on after uninstalling again those nForce drivers, let me know.

I'm also interested if you know a forum where would be deep knowledge of those nForce drivers.

I got an nForce2 board and a 9800pro and things seem great. Try installing a diff version of the nforce2 drivers.
