Radeon 8500LE HELP PLEASE!!!!!

I have downloaded & installed Radeon Win9x/Me Omega Driver 2.6.37 & am experiencing problems......

My PC boots up to the desktop for about 15 secs. then goes back to a black screen with the cursor flashing in the top left. The PC continues to boot up ( I can hear the HD working etc) but will stay on this "black" screen forever.

I have tried re-installing the driver twice. I have re-installed the latest mobo agp Via drivers. unstalled the video card from device manager etc....

Nothing seems to work.

The only driver that seems to work with this video card is the original one from the installation CD. But these drivers are really old (2002), & I am getting poor graphics in my games (Counter-Strike).

System specs are:

P4 2.8 Gig
512 meg PC2700 Ram
40 gig hd & 10 gig hd
Radeon 8500LE 128mb video card
Windows 98SE

Any help would sure be appreciated.

Welcome to DH

Have you tried installing the last official Catalysts which came out for Win9X/ME?

P.S - May I inquire as to why you're using Win98SE?

...omega and ati have pretty well dropped windows 95/98/ME completely... you can't use the latest omegas on a 9x system... they are built for 2000/xp only.....

try installing the WINDOWS 9X drivers

Thanks for the welcome No_Style.

I have tried the "latest" drivers that ATI have on their site (they too no longer support 98 or ME). These drivers also gave me problems. The only driver that seems to work with this card is on the installation CD that came with the card.

I am still running 98, because until recently I only had a 10 gig drive on my system & I didn't like all of the space that XP used. Also I still kind like 98 (believe it or not) .

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Well, since there is lack of support.. we can't really do much for you. I highly recommend moving over to at least Windows 2K. If you still like Windows 98's feel (minus the BSODs, crashes, inefficiency) you can always turn off the themes

HDD's are dirty cheap now, dude. Shop around and I'm sure you'll find a nice 80 GB for a good price.

We're affiliated with a Canadian company, but no this site isn't really Canadian. We're multicultural here. Lots of Euros, North Americans, Australians, from all corners of the Earth. With 65K members, we're that diverse.

I am seriously considering upgrading to XP........
Do you think that this will help the performance of this particular video card?
Will the latest Omega (Radeon) drivers work with the 8500LE?
Or is this not a great card to begin with?

It'll help with performance overall. Well, it should anyways. And you'll also be able to use the latest drivers which have improved greatly since the ones in your CD.

The improvements won't be mind blowing, but they'll be there. If you don't intend to play the latest hardware intensive games, the 8500LE will suit you. I've used it for a long time a year ago and it served me and my brother well.
