Can't OC 9500pr after latest cat 4.8 or omega

Okay I have been working on this one all day. I'm stumped.

I have a Gigabyte GA-7DX+ Mobo(AMD 761 chipset) with AMD XP 2400 and ATI 9500pro. I have always been able to use omega's drivers no problems and could easily set my clock rates at 342/342 but just because I have always decided to keep it at 300/300.

Now I upgraded to the latest drivers and upgraded to winXP pro sp2. now I can't overclock either setting even 1 MHz. VPU recover will kick in and set it back within seconds.... if I disable VPU recover it will flip out and xp will remove my drivers and give me an error saying its basically taken me into some kind of windows video safe mode.

I rebuilt my XP install fresh including the sp2 upgrade. I have loaded nothing else and have not only tried both omega's drivers and ATI's latest but I have also tried overclocking with about different utilities all giving me the same problem. Flips out as soon as I raise it 1 MHz.

Is this a windows SP2 problem? Has anyone else seen this? I haven't tried going back to an older version of the drivers but that's my next move. I'll let you know how that goes... kind of suprised I have yet to see anything posted with similar results.

BTW this is the event viewer error I get when I disable VPU recovery and windows flips out
"The driver ati2dvag for the display device \Device\Video0 got stuck in an infinite loop. This usually indicates a problem with the device itself or with the device driver programming the hardware incorrectly. Please check with your hardware device vendor for any driver updates."

try to remove all the current driverfiles with drivercleaner : http://www.hardwareheaven.com/cleaner
Then install the Ati 4.8's and atitool and try if you can overclock.

SP2 isn't the problem probably since allot of people including me run SP2 with an oçlocked vga card. Also make sure you have the latest chipset drivers installed (if not install Before the catalyst drivers) and set AGP frequency in your bios to 66 or 67 Mhz, disable fastwrites and set AGP voltage to 1.6v

i used the drivercleaner technique each time and I have tried all possible overclocking options including ati tool. as well as ATI's 4.8

agp frequency can not be set in my bios but I have the latest bios and chipset drivers as well as having fast write disabled and have tried both 1.6 v and 1.7 v for AGP. This has to be some kind of bug that before this driver and SP upgrade I could up both core and memory 70 MHz and now I can't do even 1 to either. I have been overclocking since pentium days and have never seen something like this. It was almost as if my frequencies were locked now but i was still able to change them and then it crashes instead.

very strange problem... thanks for the suggestions though

There's a known problem that prevents Omega from unlocking overclocking on most cards right now.

bug77, he also tried the standard so that probably isn't it.

jmwalsh8888, sounds very weird idd then, i'll think some more about it and maybe something comes to mind. If you used drivercleaner the omega bug can not be the problem.... mm food for the mind

problem solved... it's catalyst 4.8 drivers. have no idea why but I have reinstalled everything fresh so many times and different ways using both omega's drivers and ATI's and always the same problem. I finally just installed his last drivers based on cat 4.7 and bam my 9500pro is running at 360 core / 330 mem stable through two runs of 3dmark2003.

oh well ill try again another time weird though that it let me set it higher but crashed my computer (unless vpu recover was running then it just set everything back)

Hi there,

I had the same problem with cat4.8/omega4.8 and have it again with new cat4.9!
I own a 9500pro, too, and had no problems overclocking with cat4.7/omega4.7!
Weird thing, does anyone have the slightest idea what could cause this prob?

Greetz, Crackhead

I have a 9500pro also and found out it was ATItools that was causing it for me. Radkinker is the only over clocking utility that works for me with the Omega softmod drivers.

Currently using the Omega Cat 4.8's and Radlinker along with XP_SP2 final and I usually will over clock to about 351/310 with know problems at all during game play.
