Broken Omega & ATI Drivers or Broken Card?

Hi folks. I have a problem with a Sapphire 9600Pro 128mb video card and/or the Omega/ATI drivers.

Basically I have the old chestnut problem of the monitor turning off, going into standby mode and then either restarting or I have to restart. This happens in games and when using Aquamark3 tests at totally random times, but every time I use such a programme.

I would appreciate your help and advice - do you think I have a faulty AGP card? or is there a problem elswhere? I will submit both ATI and Omega driver error reports in this post.

Lets begin...(sorry for the long post)

All my problems began last weekend. My Asus P4P800 duluxe decided to die - it would no longer post bios - I could get nothing. So during the week, I purchased a new MSI 875P Neo FISR (2.0) motherboard. When I started to transfer the disks and AGP card over to the new motherboard, I noticed I could smell rotten eggs - maybe something got fried...maybe the AGP card suffered?

(btw - I didn't have this crashing problem with the ASUS. This problem is with the MSI board. I don't think its the board, due to the error messages I will share with you in a bit)

This is my new system:

Operating system: MS XP Pro SP1
Motherboard: MSI 875P NEO FISR (2.0)
Processor: P4 3.2Ghz 800FSB 1MB cache HT
INTEL INF: v 6.0.1.1002
Memory: 1GB of Corsair 3200LLPTTwinX
Directx: 9.0a (I've tried 9.0b and 9.0c with no luck)

My current Bios settings:

Hyperthread Function: Enabled
Configure DRAM by SPD: Enabled (3-4-4-8-8)
AGP Aperature Size: 64mb (I have tried 128mb but no luck)
Primary Graphics Adaptor: AGP
Performance Mode: Normal
D.O.T. Range: Normal
DRAM Freqency: 400Mhz
Adjust CPU clock: 200Mhz
DDR clock: 400MHz
Adjust AGP/PCI clock (Mhz) 66.66/33.33
DDR power voltage: 2.6v
AGP Power voltage: 1.6v

Display Properties:

Video: Sapphire Radeon 9600Pro Atlantis 128mb
Monitor: iiyama vision master pro 454
Resolution: 1280 x 1024 32 bit
Refreash Rate: 85Hz
AGP Speed: 8x
Fastwrite: Off

Smartgart:
Everything is ON

Dxdiag (display DirectX Features):
Everything is Enabled

Looking at the above, I believe that I have set up the Intel INF, DirectX, ATI or Omega drivers and the Bios correctly - the AGP card should work and I shouldn't be getting any errors and crashes if the card is working correctly.

When I use Aquamark3 to test, I crash in the same way as when I play games - at Totally random times. Here is the Windows Error popup report for the Omega drivers

"Microsoft Windows:

Computer restarted after an unexpected shutdown. Microsoft windows detected a possible device failure.

The driver for the display device was unable to complete a drawing operation. Please check with the device manufacturer for a driver update. The display driver for Sapphire Radeon 9600 Pro Atlantis (Omega 2.5.69) seems to be responsible for the system instability.

Another Windows popup at the same times states...

\Docume~1\Richard\locals^1\temp\WERZD.tmp.dir00\sy sdata.xml

I'm currently using the Omega drivers. Over the last week I had tried lots of other things, including:

Reinstalling Windows XP - 6 times
Installing Windows XP SP2 - 1 time
Unistalling Windows XP SP2 - 1 time
Installing ATI 4.4 to 4.9 drivers - lots of times
Installing DirectX
Changing Bios settings
Making sure everything in the motherboard is pressed in
I also tested the Corasir memory modules using Prime95. I had no errors for over an hour.

When I had ATI 4.9 drivers inatlled, just like the Omega drivers, I received error popups after Aquamark3 tests...

"Microsoft windows:

Computer restarted after an unexpected shutdown. Microsoft windows detected a possible device failure.

The driver for the display device was unable to complete a drawing operation. Please check with the device manufacturer for a driver update. The display driver for Sapphire Radeon 9600 Pro Atlantis seems to be responsible for the system instability.

So what do you think? Faulty drivers, faulty card or faulty motherboard?
Thanks for looking at this post.

A little update...

Unistalled and installed drivers using Genius's post - Driver Installation Guide for n00bs. Reinstalled the Omega driver.

Loaded up Aquamark3 and ran the test. The monitor went into standby mode within 7 seconds.

I've tried Aquamark3 in demo mode where you can hear sound and I believe that the programme continues for a few seconds, because I can still hear sound, even though the monitor is in standby, but then the PC rebbots.

The interesting thing is that I got another windows popup giving an error report.

The report is exactly the same as the first Omega error report, giving the same codes in the error signature. The only difference is that it produced a whatchdog report:

"Microsoft Windows:

Computer restarted after an unexpected shutdown. Microsoft windows detected a possible device failure.

The driver for the display device was unable to complete a drawing operation. Please check with the device manufacturer for a driver update. The display driver for Sapphire Radeon 9600 Pro Atlantis (Omega 2.5.69) seems to be responsible for the system instability.

I know some people have looked at this thread - have any of you got an idea or suggestion - do you think its a error with the driver, video card or motherboard?

I'd appreciate your advice.

do you have another card to test your system with, or another system to test your card in?

by the looks of it.. your thoroughly tested and checked out nurmerous ways of installing the different drivers and fresh installs...

I think the only other option atm is to start pulling other devices out of your system... such as sound card... try turning off everything you can in the bios but still allow yourself to get into windows... turn EVERYTHING off at first... pull EVERYTHING out at first.... then boot... if you haven't any issues.... start putting stuff back in/turning things on ONE BY ONE... untill you find your problem..

i've ran across a simple Bios setting .... "CPU Command Decode - FAST" was one problem i had with one board... setting to normal fixed everything... it could be as simple as this...

if you end up doing this.. and still can't fix it.. you may had a dead card.... RMA it. OR if you recently got it from a store... see if they have a 30 day return/exchange policy first and see if you can do a quick exchange.. alot faster then RMAing it

It could be that your graphics card has been damaged, when your motherboard decided to die it could have been due to a power surge or something, which could have affected your graphics card.

if you can try it in another system and see if its ok then.

Hi folks - thanks for all the replys.

Just to let you all know that I fixed it. However, I had to purchase a new MSI Geforce 6800. I liked the ATI, but this card looks okay too.

I think when the ASUS motherboard stopped posting its bios, the Sapphire 9600pro card must have got damages - maybe that was part of the rotten egg smell :P

Thinking about it, we have had a number a powercuts really early in the morning the past few weeks where I am in the UK - although I have all my plugs of surge protection - something could have jolted through the system?

Anyways, its all sorted out now.

To me that sounded like some kind of overheating problem: it will shut down to protect itself from damage.

Well anyways... good to know it is sorted out now.

Awwww I would have suggested getting some alcohol and cleaning the AGP contacts on the card. Thats how i fixed my friends Geforce 3. He was getting similar issues and then we noticed that the contacts were quite tarnished...after a good cleaning, it gave no more lip.

well in any case, you have a better card now! I hope it works well for yah.

most surge protectors are good for one surge problem, then u need to buy a new one. i recomend a better one with batterys, time to backup, plus its good for more than one use usually. the costs are more expensive ranging from 40$ usa and up, tho im not sure what its like in the UK as for prices.

i worked at many of places and shorts and stuff like that do cause problems to certain components in the computer, glad u found the problem and fixed it.
