How safe and effective is Overdrive with X800 XT?

I need a little bit more fps to run Rome Total War with everything maxed out.

With overdrive enabled, will it ever go "under" the defaults?

Also, how safe and beneficial is it?

Is there an alternative people like to use if this doesn't work too well?

Thanks for the help!

Lower the Effects slider a bit in the game settings if it slows down during use of fire arrows.

It's very safe, but also not very beneficial. It's as simple as those two factors going hand in hand. If you really want to overclock, turn off Overdrive and use some manual utility. Make sure to have a good airflow through the system with the use of case fans.
