To be fair though, this "write delay bug" seems to be REALLY rare......since I'm the only person I've seen thus far who's experienced it. |

But......heh, I don't quite see it as a "waste" anymore, that's for damn sure. I have now compromised to at least have it monitoring my main windows system partition (which should be enough for 99% of cases). You're right, if I had had it on before, I would never have had to deal with all this. |

Anyway.....just to bring finality to this thread, and give clarity to the situation so there are no unfair impressions dealt, here's a final synopsis.
Two issues caused this fiasco. 1. The XP tweaker that came with the driver package, and 2., I had already been having some issues with some of my disabled Windows services previously, for reasons that are still not entirely clear, but nevertheless only exacerbated the situation. So......again, THE DRIVER ITSELF HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. In fact, once I had gotten my system functional again earlier today, I tried installing them again (this time with a restore point, duh), and actually gained about 5 frames over the normal 4.12 beta Catalysts in Source tests. So they're definitely solid drivers. As to how I got everything fixed, well, I did eventually have to re-install windows, which I unfortunately couldn't just repair b/c I didn't have a CD. No problem though, I just took the opportunity to upgrade from Home to Pro. Life goes on. And it cleaned up my system anyway. A few hours to take re-installing proggies and drivers is a small price to pay, really. And in the end, I learned more about Windows than I did before, which usually happens in these situations. So overall......this was actually a positive experience, if one looks at it objectively. Lastly, BIG THANKS TO REGENERAT1ON. That guy is absolutely stellar. He took well over an hour of his time to help me one on one thru AIM and NetMeeting. There need to be more people like him on the net, methinks. Now then. Time to finally play Half Life 2. How's that as a reward for work, eh? |
