I solved the "funky flashing" prob yesterday by installing my original drivers from ASUS (i have the 6700N notebook). Their latest drivers are from 11-10, HL² runs fast like before, and all textures are fine now. \o/

Only one problem left...the stuttering. Hope there'll be a patch sooooon...

Could you give me a link to the ASUS drivers, I can't find them.

Thanks in advance

I installed the 4.12 beta drivers after running driver cleaner. Played HL2 in one sitting (I'm a huge nerd) with no crashes and no flickering or any other anomalies other than 1-2 second sound loops in the later city levels (only after loading the map, then it ran smooth) and sometimes texture shimmering due to 8xAF . Game ran super smooth! I was amazed that with all that detail and physics and AI, it ran as smooth, if not smoother than CSS. Doesn't make sense to me.

Settings: 1024x768, 8xAF, 4xAA
System: X800Pro, AMD Athlon64 3500+, MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum, 1GB Geil pc3200 ultra x dual channel mem, Seagate 120GB SATA 7200rpm. Nothing overclocked.

Hi everyone,

my copy of Half Life 2 keeps crashing in the menu or a few seconds the game starts. I have a

Prescott 3.2 Ghz
Ati All In Wonder Radeon 9600XT 128 MB
2 GB RAM 400 Mhz
120x2 GB hard disc space 7200 RPM in RAID 0
Windows XP

I tried display drivers 4.10, 4.11, 4.12 beta, formatted my pc, checked for viruses, disabled sound card, assured that audio capabilites on the motherboard were disables in BIOS, shut down internet connection during game, shut down every program, changed the position of sound card in my case, scanned Steam for corrupt files using the update on Steam page news, changed video settings and resolutions. The game just freezes my PC no matter what.

I experience none of such issues while playing Counter Strike Source online, Doom 3, Far Cry or Call of Duty.

If someone can, please help. I could even record the freezing with my cam to show you if needed. Tnx in advance everyone.

Ramification is on a distinguished road

I installed the drivers and they work great for HL2, even fixed an issue in
another game RTCW Enemy Territory that had a PunkBuster issue.

I know this is HL2 only. But I thought I'd mention Need For Speed Underground
2 does not do well with the drivers. The streets look like 8-bit graphics.

I do have that same stuttering issue everyone else has in some areas and
during a heavy load. Not enough to effect the gameplay.

Intel P4 2600 Chaintech mobo
512 mb Rosewill<- I know I need more memory.

I am also getting the odd multi-coloured flashes and blocks on some textures. I've noticed that it I minimize the game with Alt+Tab them maximize it again, the flashes have gone, and stay gone for about 5 minutes and then come back. I also noticed that if I turn the texture detail down to "medium" there are no flashes at all...

I have an AMD Athlon Xp 2400+ Processor and a 128MB Radeon 9600XT graphics card. I'm currently using the Catalyst 4.11 drivers, not tried the 4.12beta yet...

Green Fire.. wait what?

Ok, here's my problem. I've been seeing the color green where there should be no green. For instance when I'm in the "Follow Freeman" level (I think that's what it's called) the area (Ground, walls, etc.) immediately around any fires or burning ruble is the color green. Or when I'm making my way through the sewers near the begining of the game the edges of the large sewer pipes are green. Basically things that shouldn't normally be the color green are infact green. Even the lighting from regular white florecent lights are greenish/blue. So far i've had this problem with 4.9, 4.10, 4.11 and now 4.12 Beta. I also noticed that when I first met Barney his hair had a slight green hue to it.

Also note that I'm not seeing a solid color green, I can still see the texture, but it's just green.

EDIT: I ran Driver Cleaner (which i should have done in the first place) and then reinstalled 4.11. Same problem. Then I ran Driver Cleaner again and installed 4.12 beta, again, same problem. I have no Idea what the hell's going on. I mean, something has to be wrong with SOMETHING if I have the same problem with every driver I've used so far right?

Here are some links to some screenshots:

Also here's something strange, in the first one, you'll notice that there's no building on the left above the bridge, but when I shift my view a little, one just appears there. I've noticed that happen quite a bit.

Are you using CCC with the 4.11s? If so try disabling all Cat optimizations, this fixed the problem for my friend Russ over at Beyond3D.

Hope it helps.

Hey guys, just curious. Do the ATI brightness/gamma sliders in your control panel have any affect on your HL2's ingame brightness?

Mine resets to default as soon as HL2 launches or alt tabs back into. I can't play man, I am so freaking angry. Waiting for so long and the reason why I can't play is because its too dark and the ingame brightness doesn't help. My monitor is somewhat more darker than others (Some energy saving monitor bs).

ARGH HELP!!!!

HP Media Center PC m1090n
3.6Ghz Pentium 4 HT
1GB PC3200 DDR memory
ATi Radeon X600 PRO 256MB DDR
250GB HDD 7200RPM (200GB free with HL2 installed)
XP Media Center Ed.
Drivers for vid card: 6.14.0010.6483

Basicly the best computer in HP's lineup for the time being.

Game Settings:

1900x1200 Widescreen 16:10 (I have a 23" HP Widescreen LCD monitor)
Models: High
Textures: High
Anti-Aliasing: None
Antiscopic(sp) Filtering: Trilinear
Shadow Detail: High
Shader Detail: High
Reflections: Reflect world
vsync: disabled

(all of these are recommended it says)

Hey guys. I bought HL2 on the 16th (retail) and I've been having some FPS issues, but as I hit the end of the game, the sound started going haywire....and I started getting mad at my FPS aswell...it seems it's locked on 20. I see others with 9800 cards pulling better FPS...and its getting on my nerves. In comparison with Doom 3 (which isn't as compatable with a lot of lower end systems as HL2 is supposed to be)...Doom 3 pulls 50-60 FPS on Ultra, but no AA/AF (aswell recommended).

Any suggestions?

These drivers are really bad, I have much better performance using Catalyst 4.7 than these.

In the intro speech (G-Man talking) there is some stutter in the sound when the image fades in and out, right before he starts his next sentence, with Catalyst 4.7 there is no stutter here.

Otherwise in-game I have better FPS and less stuttering using 4.7 than 4.12b. So something is seriously not good with these drivers.

I'm using x800 XT.

I finally threw caution to the wind, and followed someone's advice about upping the AGP vlotage to 1.8 My mobo only goes to 1.7v, which enabled me to actually load my saved game and get to the storage room behind the Security room w/ Barney. Then it craps out again, looping soud and giving me a Blue Screen.

missing textures

I am looking for advice from anyone. I am not able to play HL2 due to the fact that many textures are missing such as:

police cannot be seen...can see batons and shadows
First girl that speaks seems to be behind wall...wall cannot be seen
suit cases seem to be floating in air
cannot move in areas due to invisible objects

system config:

windows xp
ati 9800 pro 128 mb driver version 4.12 beta
2.4 ghz P4
512 meg ram

I'm having the shuttering and occassional lock ups. The graphics also appear washed out at times.. Frame rates are not bad.

Re: stutter. I know these sort of problems have a habit of coming and going, but fingers crossed turning AI off with 4.12b seems to have worked for me. Almost no stuttering (nothing I would consider unusual or a problem) and much better frame rates. Seriously a whole different game!

Re: Gamma problems. I had the same issue (HL2 did not allow a big enough change in gamma to get the brightness high enough). HL2 sets the gamma on startup if you use the Catalyst Control Center to map gamma-up and gamma-down to a key, then set the default 3D profile to the gamma settings you want you can get back to them by a quick "gamma-up" "Gamma-down" once HL2 has loaded. You can also create a profile for HL2 and load it with just one hotkey press, but from my experience this caused problems if you re-loaded HL2 and ATI CCC still thought you were using the HL2 profile - it didn't change the settings a second time. A workable 2nd option is to do both - map a game profile to one key and gamma-up/gamma-down to two others. Then first time you load HL2 you can set the gamma as you want with one hotkey, 2nd time use up/down. (ps. it is possible I just had a brain storm with game profiles not working the 2nd time. It would be interesting to hear som other experiences.

sticktron,

allow me to elaborate, i dont care for maxing crap out that doesnt matter. and 100 fps is nice and smoother in cs source then 50 fps n less. (because cs source is a online fightin game not a visual ooo game).

for hl2 i run it on max and for doom3 i run it on max and for farcry i run it on max. 8x 16x 1152x764 with 90ish fps. the 2000 page file helps other users that have the error virtual memory to low.
2000 isnt a waste, especially when u got 100+ gig hard drives.
1000 for lower drive space users.

and sticktron this isnt a forum thread to brag in/fight in, its for helping others. matter of fact im still waiting for some one to tell me whats the command line for 100 refresh rate in launch options.
-refreshrate 100?

peace VuLLs

Hi Catalyst Maker,

In some levels I can see blue lines around the water.
You can see an example of this issue here.

I tried Cats 4.10, 4.11 and 4.12 beta but this issue wasn't solved.

My PC
ASUS P4P800 DLX
P4C @3.3Ghz
Radeon 9800Pro
1024Mo Ram

I play in 1280*960, all parameter are the Highest and FSAA is in 4x mode, AI on low level.

Despite of this point the games runs pretty good, especially with cats 4.12beta, keep the good work.

Sorry to hear of so many problems with Half-Life2. I am having no issues, no flickering, no stuttering, no graphical anomalies, with either system and will add my specs to the info pool.

System1-Nothing overclocked.
ASUSP4C800E-deluxe
P4 3.4 NW
Corsair PC3200LL Pro 2 x 512 memory
ASUS 9800XT
Cat 4.12b

The 4.12b cats gave me large increases in 3D2001, 3D2003, and 3D2005 as well as raising HL2 FPS. The 4.8 cats which I was using were working very well also but with lower Scores and frame rates.

Game settings

1280x1024
Models: High
Textures: High
Anti-Aliasing: 2x
Antiscopic(sp) Filtering: 4x
Shadow Detail: High

Corsair PC-3200 C2 2x512
Gainward GFFX 5900 flashed to 5950 ultra

Out of my depth with the techo conversations on this thread. All I know is that the best i can get is medium/no aa/reflectsome graphic settings with HL2. On high and reflect all end up with the stutters.

Running P2.6 512M Asus P4P800 9600XT at 1024 x 768.

Should I be downloading this 4.12b to improve performance? Or am I at the end of my hardware's performance capabilities?
